Broke my right big toe Saturday night. Confirmed with x-ray today that it's broke. Doctor says no surgery needed and it should take 6-8 weeks to heal enough to run. It's still really swollen, black & blue and very painful. The timing couldn't be much worse. I have fishing trips to Alaska and Canada the next two weeks. Doctor said to find a boot with a lot of room in the toe box and go fishing, so I'm looking online for a size 13 super wide boot. Other than getting a roomy boot and bringing plenty of pain medicine, does anyone have any other suggestions for dealing with a broken big toe?

Stay away from children. They have a knack for stepping on broken big toes!

Get a pair of sandals. No matter how much room you have in a boot, your big toe will still hit the top of the boot with every step.

Yes, I was wearing flip flops. I did the responsible thing and put away my empty shopping cart in one of those cart storage areas in the WalMart parking lot. I turned around to walk back to my truck and someone almost ran me over. I went to spin around and jump out of the way and I tripped on the curb. The lesson learned here is not to put your shopping cart away in the WalMart parking lot if you are wearing flip flops. It's too dangerous. Just unload your cart, leave it in the spot next to your car and get out of there. Or, just don't go to WalMart.

Or don't wear flip flops!!!!

My big toe will not bend since I broke it and had a screw put in it, so I can't wear flip flops. Two or three steps and it will fly right off the foot because I can't bend my toes.

Simms boots with the new sole. DON'T go with felt. Reason being you are going to want a stiff sole to decrease the amount of flex (upward motion that is normal when we walk). I would go two sizes over on the boots. One normally but to insure room maybe two?

I have a pair of Simms with the vibram soles. I will NEVER go back to felt.

Good luck

Try on some Keen footware, they appear to have a wide toe box.
