Question, Not trying to start a war or anything. I just want an honest educated answer. I've seen pics of many nice 6 pointers on here, and I myself have a nice 6 point mounted, My best Muzzleloader Buck to date, Only difference between him and an 8 pointer I have mounted is just the 2 extra points. Same spread height, etc. I've had an Uncle pass on a big 6 at Catoosa a few years back and a family friend had a huge 6 walk under his stand at Catoosa as well. My question, with Lease Mgt. and Hunting shows etc. Most antler restrictions are 4 to a side or something of that nature. I know about QDM, but where did the "It has to be 4 points" get adopted from? As we know there are many small 8's as they are Huge 6 points. Like if a basket "8" would walk by it would be legal, Where as a Huge 6 would be off limits. Just wondering where this judgement and No love for 6 points started at. Thanks for reading. Just curiosity got the best of me today.

I personally think point and spread restrictions makes no sense in managing a farm, age is the best way to manage, only problem is most average hunters can't judge a deer's age on the hoof, most of these clubs that brag about having a 8 point or better rules kill mostly 2.5 y/o bucks. Wmas don't have much of a choice because they can't control who hunts there or get drawn. I'll probably have some meat hunters not like this post but I'm not really a trophy, I just would rather take 4.5 or older bucks, of coursei would be lying if I said if a really big 3.5 walks by I wouldn't take it.

When I am "trophy" hunting (not shooting at hair) points are the last thing I look at.

If you see a 3.5 or 4.5 year old six point there is (I think) a very good possibility that is all he will ever have from a point standpoint.

Age is the best way to manage. However, on public areas how do you do that? From an enforcement standpoint, having age restrictions rather than antler restrictions would be a huge nightmare. The vast majority of people cannot judge the age of a deer on the hoof.furthermore, most do not want to learn to judge age on the hoof when they may only hunt an area once or twice a year.

Imagine a regulation at catoosa that required all antlered deer be 3.5 or older to be legal. Joe blow rolls into the checking station with a larger than average 2.5 year old. TWRA writes him a ticket for killing an underage deer. Keep in mind that aging deer by tooth wear and replacement is as much and art as it is a science, and you can have disagreement between biologists, especially with tweeners. The only way to solve that problem would be to extract a tooth from every buck killed and send it off for analysis and wait for the results. That simply is not feasible.

The simple solution......go by antler points/spread based on years of data collected at the checking station. Generally the rules are put into place to protect the majority of bucks 2.5 or younger. There will be outliers, bucks that have high 6 point racks with narrow spread all their lives and bucks that are legal 8 points as 2.5 year olds, but they generally are not the rule.

Number of points restrictions are probably the easiest and fastest attempt at saving young bucks thus the antler number restriction. It's not necessarily the best method. As mentioned a 4.5-5.5 year old 6 pointer is in all probability going to die as a 6 pointer. A better system (IMO)is a combination of antler score and/or 4.5 years old or older. You're covering more bases with this type system.

They have added a minimum spread at catoosa now. If outside its ears its legal. Its not a perfect system but it still saves more 1 and 2 year olds than non restrictions. The bucks are definitely bigger at catoosa because of it.

perfect example of why point restrictions are stupid
!! you weed out all the good young eight and ten points and are left with 6 year old 5,6, point bucks.

I just pass on 6 points because i set my limit on 8....having said that i would still shoot a 18" wide 6 if it had 6" bases and 13" tines with 23" main beams.............then it becomes a OMG buck and that is a shooter. \:\)

I have killed more 6pts than any other, most have been 2.5 years old & this 1 was probly 4.5 or older,I take what is offered & in this end of the state its hard to be picky with public land & limited private property to hunt.

The 4 on a side rule was designed to save the majority of yearling bucks, while still allowing the harvest of the Majority of mature bucks. AS always there will be exceptions to every rule, as in big mature 6 pts, or yearling 7 pts!!

All I know is I had to leg a huge 6 pt. walk on Catoosa and it sucked. It had at least 12 in. g2's and good mass all the way out , almost touched on the ends. It wouldn't of hurt as much but it walked by me when I was on the ground at about 30 yds, with a rifle.

Pled....that deer would be legal on our areas with antler restriction because of his spread. And, you are correct, I would not let him walk.

Oh I can understand when you have to let em walk due to restrictions , this pic was actually taken in the middle of the park right beside the walking trail , lol you hunt here and you go to jail , I just wanted to share the pics with yall.

But let something like this guy walk by me on one of our leases , and lead will fly lol. Heck i'd shoot him if he only had 4 pts!!!
