Did you have chicken pox before?

When it starts to really hurt it feels like you could have a bad burn or have a broke rib, that sounds crazy but it hurts.

Hang in there bud! I had it one time that was so bad, I couldn't stand for even my clothes to touch me.

They tend to run along a nerve route I believe. Mine started on the right side of my back as a patch of blisters like you said, then traveled in a streak around my ribs and just shy of the center of my chest. Excruciating is the word that most describes the pain with shingles imo. I wondered why the Dr prescribed some major pain medicine when he diagnosed me initially, then after the next day, I knew full well why. I remember feeling like I literally had a blade sticking thru my back, and coming out my chest.

MUP is right about traveling a nerve route. You will have them from the center line of your back around to the centerline of your chest. I've never heard of them affecting both sides at the same time. An old timers saying, was if they went all the way arund you died.

tndad - it helps to start this med early in the process - but that doesn't always happen. Many people require a very high - or even maximum dose - and it might need to be taken for several months - not just a quick fix for the immediate pain. It is actually indicated for "post" herpetic neuralgia - which is usually what bothers older people the most - more-so even that the acute episode.

One doctor said I should get the shingles vaccine as soon Ive healed up, another said he didn't recommend it. Ill get some more opinions and hope for the best. Im feeling better everyday, Ive heard there is a chance the pain could last even after the blisters are gone.

I hate it for you. My Mom had no immunity to the chicken pox virus and got shingles anytime she was exposed to a child with them. I have had them twice and they are awful. I also had chicken pox twice so maybe I am done. The Dr. gave me Zovirax and it cut down the time I had to suffer. The second time, I got the drug quicker and only dealt with them for 4 days before they quit hurting and they didn't run all over that time.
If they itch, take a bath with some baking soda in the water. It helps dry them up without drying your skin.
