I was looking for a study I heard about a while back about how quickly deer populations grow exponentially due to prevalence of having twins. While reading this I saw where they were talking about does 8-16 years old????

I may be way behind but I thought an "old" deer was like 3 to 5 years old. Did everyone else know they actually live this long?

I don't know anything about aging deer, but it doesn't surprise me does getting 8+ years old, because they don't get shot. Bucks though, in my pressured area, are old once they become 2.5-3.5

Deer in captivity have lived to be ~20 years old. 10+ is exceptionally rare in the wild because their teeth don't last that long, but if they are eating a diet that does not wear their teeth down, 13-15 probably happens on occasion.

I can't for the life of me remember his screen name right now but back when we did the biggest buck / oldest doe a man won the doe contest every year I guess.

He killed some amazingly old does every year.

Man, that is going to drive me crazy now. \:\(

My friend was working on his Masters in Wildlife Biology at Miss State in 2005. In 2004, another graduate student killed a doe in southern Mississippi that had been ear tagged as part of a deer study in the early 90s. She was crazy old.

This is the oldest I have seen, found a skeleton while shed hunting earlier this year. I think she's at least 7 if not 8.

Although few of them do, deer CAN lead fairly lengthy lives. The oldest wild deer Matson's Lab has ever aged by cementum annuli was 19 1/2 years old, and she was killed by a hunter on the Cumberland Plateau in southeast TN a few years back.

Without question does often live much longer than bucks, but hunter harvest is only part of the equation. In fact, in many parts of the country, doe harvests almost equal (and in many locations, actually exceed) buck harvests year after year. The longer potential lifespan of female deer over male deer is more due to females "easier" lives, in that they do not have to deal with the stresses of the rut that bucks endure, nor major injuries caused by fighting and signposting (body injuries and brain abscesses caused by sparring, fighting, and rubbing behavior in bucks).

Habitat and terrain are also key players in deer lifespan. Deer in flat, agricultural areas often live quite a bit longer than deer in rugged and/or big woods environments. The year round availability of high-quality food sources in agricultural areas greatly reduces seasonal nutritional stresses, increasing lifespan of old deer more vulnerable to malnutrition.

In flat, agricultural land, a few bucks will make it into the 8-10 year-old ages, while in hilly hardwoods, few bucks live past 6 or 7. Does over 12 years of age are not uncommon in agricultural areas, but are far more rare in rugged forestland.

I've seen a couple does on trail cam that look pretty haggard, river bottom/ag type habitat. Would love to stick an arrow in one of them and see how old, as much as I'd like a 3 or 4 year old buck. Next old doe I kill will be made into a European mount that will go on the wall with my bucks.
