Probably are tilling too deep. You have to gradually get deeper as you till. I normally make a round with 3 to 4 inches and then go a little deeper each time until I got the ground like I want it.
That's exactly what the problem is. I've been using the same old Troy bilt Horse model since 1984. On new or hard ground you have to slowly increase the depth that you till. It may take several passes gradually tilling deeper and deeper.

It is a mid 80s horse. Not what is made now by MTD. From what I have read this has two speeds all adjusted by which pullu the belt is on. I was unable to get the belt to move though. Anyone have expirence with these older tillers?
