After all of the monetary damage I have recently recieved, I cant wait for the chance to kill one. You have to look at that population estimate very closely. The study area didnt include alot of area here that is full of bears. Bears like the food that comes along with early successional habitat, especially during the Summer. Guess what, there is no early successional habitat to speak of in 70 some odd percent of the study area, it has been federal land since the 1970's with no logging. If the study area was shifted west alittle to include the prime habitat, the estimate would be even higher than what it is.

I didnt see that it stated the area in detail,I would hazard a guesstimate that it surrounded the core area where they were released.I reckon some folks have better info ,I have to rely on news reports ect... for the most part.

Mike, if your interested go the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission website and watch the video where they explain the study at the commission meeting, it shows a map of the study area and is color coded with the number of hits to each station. Here is a link...

Do we really want an expansion of bears onto private lands and human populated areas outside the Big South Fork?

I can see sustaining a viable bear population within the Big South Fork, but think much of their protections should end at the Big South Fork's boundaries.

I look at the expanding bear ranges much like the State of Virginia looks at the expanding elk ranges. Where they don't want them (or any more of them), elk are simply legal to kill by any deer hunter, and that seems to prevent the elk from expanding into areas they're not wanted. How many people living on private property around the boundaries of Big South Fork want to see MORE bears on their land?

How many is ENOUGH?

Why don't we re-establish bear populations within the city limits of Nashville? With the Cumberland River flowing thru, and all the patchwork of woods, fields, and city parks, shouldn't they be able to thrive (as they once did) in the Nashville Basin?

I think it's great that the bears are making a come back. I had one tear my feeder all to pieces just a couple weeks ago. I'll just have to bear proof it next time.

There are already many many many bears living on the private lands outside of the BSF. We will have to have a season on the private lands and state lands because I seriously doubt the National Park Service tree huggers will ever allow a season, but I could be wrong. To answer your question, most of the local population wants zero bears on their land. That is evident by 4 seperate Fentress county commission resolutions, 1 Scott County resolution, and 1 Mcreary Co. KY resoluion banning the release of any more bears. To know the situation, you have to know the history.... TWRA and NPS brought the bears in as an "experimental release". When the review and comment period came up for the Environmental Assessment that is required by the National Environmental Policy Act several years after the reintroduction, all these resolutions were enacted and the TWRA and NPS just walked away from the program, of course leaving the bears anyways and starting this population boom. Many local equine groups threatened lawsuits over the alleged(key word alleged) violation of federal law but as with most things with government, it never came to a head.
Now as Ive said before, I support the bears and enjoy having them, but it crosses the line when they get very populated, cause me serious monetary damage, and the TWRA still refuses a season.
