Has anyone had the Shingles? I had radiation treatment for cancer 18 months ago and now I have the Shingles,my doctor says more than likely the radiation has stressed my body even though it was over a year ago. Im healing but these things are no joke. Atleast they are on my side and not on my face. I do have a decent excuse for not getting a Turkey this year.

I think anyone can get them that has had the chicken pox. My mother had them a few years ago and she was miserable for many days. I have never had the chicken pox, so I hope to never get either. Good luck with it. I have heard calamine lotion helps with he itch.

I have had them twice, VERY VERY PAINFUL! Get on the medicine as soon as you can. They usually give you Valtrex. They will probably want to give something for pain, unless you have a high tolerance for pain, take it. Good luck!

I've them a few years ago. Like rabbit said they are painful. After the worst was over they settled in my right shoulder. I don't think you ever get rid of them entirely.

About the most painful thing I can think of ever having! I came down with shingles two days before heading to Fla on vac a couple years ago. Shingles and heat are not compatible...the most miserable vac I've ever been on. Trying to keep pace with the kids on the beaches and parks was almost unbearable...almost. it took weeks for them to clear up for me, but still have a little nerve damage on my right side where they first broke out. Hope you heal quickly. After some research I found that 90% of folks only have the one outbreak and don't get them again, but that 10% that have reoccurences . There is an injection you can get to help prevent them, but you have to be completely over the initial outbreak before you can take it.

My cousin is dealing with them now and they are in his face and head. Said he wouldn't wish it on anybody. His mom, my aunt, says he never had chicken pox.

I don't know if I've ever had chicken pox. The only person who would know is dead so I can't ask her. They have a shot you can take now to prevent them, but you have to be 60 to take it.

Im 42.I had testicular cancer which means they cut off one of my nuts and then 20 radiation treatments. I was doing fine once the radiation side effects wore off. The first sores looked like a bunch of blisters and are clearing up but they get freaking sore every once in a while. When it starts to really hurt it feels like you could have a bad burn or have a broke rib, that sounds crazy but it hurts.

Hang in there bud! I had it one time that was so bad, I couldn't stand for even my clothes to touch me.

They tend to run along a nerve route I believe. Mine started on the right side of my back as a patch of blisters like you said, then traveled in a streak around my ribs and just shy of the center of my chest. Excruciating is the word that most describes the pain with shingles imo. I wondered why the Dr prescribed some major pain medicine when he diagnosed me initially, then after the next day, I knew full well why. I remember feeling like I literally had a blade sticking thru my back, and coming out my chest.

MUP is right about traveling a nerve route. You will have them from the center line of your back around to the centerline of your chest. I've never heard of them affecting both sides at the same time. An old timers saying, was if they went all the way arund you died.

tndad - it helps to start this med early in the process - but that doesn't always happen. Many people require a very high - or even maximum dose - and it might need to be taken for several months - not just a quick fix for the immediate pain. It is actually indicated for "post" herpetic neuralgia - which is usually what bothers older people the most - more-so even that the acute episode.

One doctor said I should get the shingles vaccine as soon Ive healed up, another said he didn't recommend it. Ill get some more opinions and hope for the best. Im feeling better everyday, Ive heard there is a chance the pain could last even after the blisters are gone.

I hate it for you. My Mom had no immunity to the chicken pox virus and got shingles anytime she was exposed to a child with them. I have had them twice and they are awful. I also had chicken pox twice so maybe I am done. The Dr. gave me Zovirax and it cut down the time I had to suffer. The second time, I got the drug quicker and only dealt with them for 4 days before they quit hurting and they didn't run all over that time.
If they itch, take a bath with some baking soda in the water. It helps dry them up without drying your skin.
