This was killed in Kentucky by an acquaintance the season before last. It was a nine pointer and field dressed at 165 pounds. The shot was at 50 yards and the post mortem revealed it was double lunged. The deer ran about 40-50 yards and fell over dead. The load was a 50 grains 3fg Goex and a patched round ball. I don't recommend a 32 on deer but I guess a well placed shot counts for a lot.

Thanks a lot, I just found myself looking at a $700 "Tennessee Rifle" .54 cal flintlock kit.

The book Gunmakers of Buffalo Valley and Greasy Cove in Unicoi County TN is full of "small" caliber rifles. There's 1 .40 and .45 in there, the rest are .38, .36, or .32 caliber rifles.

I found that interesting. I target shoot with a .40 but wouldn't hunt deer with it. I guess I like the margin of error that a .54 gives me.

A friend of mine from KY has a .29 flintlock that he hunts squirrels with.

Just goes to show if you know what your gun can do and you do your part it results in a clean kill. I think this guy made a more ethical shot with a .32 sparker than many do with high power centerfire round at an unknown long range. Congrats to him.

The old boy and I met at the NMLRA matches on the offhand line. Both of us were using our trusty 32 flinters and we sorta hit it off. I can assure you that he is a fine marksman. He normally uses a larger caliber flintlock on deer but he had been having quite a bit of ribbing from a few of his non-traditional ML hunting buddies about his ability to take any game much larger than a squirrel with that rifle. His original intent was to try to kill a small doe with it to prove to them otherwise. The photo, of course, tells the rest of the story.

By the way, if you're wondering about the legality of the 32 caliber on deer, Kentucky has no caliber restrictions for muzzle loaders.

That's encouraging. I have a 36 cal cap lock rifle that I've been squirrel hunting with using a patched round ball load. I recently picked up a set of T/C 128gr Maxi Hunter mould blocks for it and have been tempted to use it some during deer season since Tennessee decreased the minimum caliber from .40 to .36

I think your maxie hunter will work on deer ok if you keep your shots close and put it in the boiler room.
