I will post alot of pics later, but I guess just wanting to vent now. I checked on my orchards yesterday and have a total of 7 apple and pear trees that are damaged pretty bad by a bear. Not any fruit on them of course, just damaged them anyway Basically it was tearing limbs down. Alot of it was to trees that are just getting into production. It also damaged two cameras, letting water get in them where it ripped my mounting system out. Im figuring about several hundred dollars in damage right now, and thats not even counting older trees being worth more money. It makes me wonder now if Im ever even going to be able to have a orchard. I hope to be able to salvage most, if not all of the trees but they will set back alot and will be very prone to disease and insect damage now so I may lose them on down the road. This is not something I do just for wildlife, I was planning on having fruit for myself and alot of family but I just wont be able if this bear doesn't leave or isn't stopped. Just makes me sick to my stomach

That's a terrible feeling after so much time, work, money and anticipation.... Hope they recover for you. Can you get a nuisance permit?

Im going to try to, course that would likely take hours of hunting for it that I just dont have. Be nice if they would come trap it.

Everybody Ive asked about it says there just isnt a way that is economically feasible for me to protect mine, short of killing the problem of course.Good jolt of electricity in a fence all the way around the trees and baiting it to where the bear bites it and gets hit good is all Ive found, and thats just not feasible.

I wonder if you could use barbwire somehow?

That really sux. I'd be getting a depredation permit in hopes of getting rid of the problem.

Im going to be calling our regional office to attempt that in the morning when the offices open up. I figured I would get a big NO. If I can get a permit, I know it will still be difficult to actually find the bear without dogs anyway.

I think Region III has at least one bear trap. That may be an option as well.

I would definitely prefer that over having to kill it when not in a legitimate hunt if that makes sense.

Snare that sucker with an Aldrich snare and have TWRA come get him.

I would be fuming! You might want to fence off a small orchard with some 8ft fence for your personal consumption. I personally hope those bears never make it to Middle TN.

I would have traps out for that sucker as quick as possible. I got a depredation from Region 2 and it was very easy. I had it in about 2 hours from when I called to report wildlife damage.

yep, I had the same thing happen to me a couple years ago I only lost about 4 trees. For me, I have found that if I put barbed wire around 3 t-posts fencing in the tree so far the Bears have left them alone. Of course if the bear wanted to he can get to them but so far it seems to be enough of a deterrent to stop it. On the flip side, you can't protect every tree so this is not a cost-effective way of doing business. I guess a permit would be the way I'd go since you're actually seeing them during daytime hours. Rarely do I get daytime photos of my bears.

Sorry I should have specified - no fortunately it wasn't for bear. it was for turkey. I have had a flock of about 150 turkey raid my aunts horse barn daily getting in stalls with horses eating the feed and it was getting out of control. TWRA showed up, looked at the problem and handed me a permit on the spot.

I can try to barb wire around some of my favorite trees I suppose. I have so many spread so far around that doing them all would cost me a ton lol Hopefully I hear back soon on whether or not they will come trap it or do something. Course Im sure there will just be more bear, last year I had 5 over the course of the Summer and Fall but none of them caused problems other than slightly messing with one camera. 1 large male sort of took up residence there and never caused problems, I planned on that being my first bear if we could ever get a season but a deer hunter a few places over killed him so oh well.

I've also read that animals will not walk on fencing laid down on ground around the tree?

I got a depredation permit fairly easily. Actually seeing the bear in this kind of habitat is going to be a whole nother thing though.
