I was just wondering today about some sayings/phrases. Are they tied to a certain area, or group.

Such as:

I need to go to the store to trade. (get grocery)

How much did you draw this week? (income)

'm sure there are more of these around. What are some that you're familiar with?

"all set"

Round here, it probably means "yeah, I'm doing ok"

In New York, it means I'm done. So when your good looking waitress at Del Monicos in Utica approaches you and your half-eaten cannoli and asks you if you're all set, you'd better say NO. I still regret letting that one slip away. The cannoli, of course.

one bit is 12 1/2 cents, so two bits is a quarter. Making four bits .50 cents.... Did I win?

Yup, a Coke means a Coke just like a Pepsi means a Pepsi but instead of saying soda pop, it's just pop for short.

In the days before political correctness..

I am fagged out.....means I am tired.
Went to crap and the hogs ate him......means he has been gone a long time.
Poke.....a sack
Let me ruminate on it.......means let me think about it.
Slicker than a crap house rat......you can't trust him.
He hoped him out.....he helped him out
Fell out of the ugly tree, or was beat with the ugly stick.....means the dogs won't even play with them unless they have a pork chop around their neck.
A month of Sundays.......means a long time.
It's better to be shot at and missed then crapped at and hit.
What the little boy shot at.......it means there was nothing.

Technically, "yinz" is what yinzers say. I regularly go to DQ and ask for Jimmies on my ice cream cones just to mess with them. Jimmies are sprinkles in pittsburghese. Wush is used for wash. Wuff is used for wolf. Prolly is used for probably. the list is endless. I am from WV but most of my family is in southwestern PA, in which they refer to me as a hoopie or a Pennsyltuckian.

I would be scared to go to DQ and ask for "jimmies" on my ice cream. Jimmies may be sprinkles in Pittsburg, but jimmie means something else where I'm from.

Linguistics are definately region specific and can also be finely zeroed in on a specific locales such as the mountains of east TN when compared to the foothills of se TN. Sometimes just a difference of 50 miles will have a pronounced difference in dialects and terminology. Im on my phone right now and ill throw up a site, if I can find later that will narrow down to a specific
area with a decent degree of accuracy just based on dialect and use of verbage.

Have fun with thus in the mean time.
