Chad Cross was hunting for turkey in the woods in Alabama when a venomous pit viper rattlesnake bit him in the lower left leg. Nervous and scared, the Montgomery resident attempted to calm himself and slow his heart rate so as to prevent the quick spreading of the deadly venom throughout his body. He then made a move that saved his life. He pulled out his $10 snake-bite kit. WSFA has the incredible story:

Yep, snake boots here, too. I've already got a scare from a shark and another from a dog. No need to add a snake bite to the list of scars.

Never wore them never felt a needed to. I worry more about slipping/falling or stepping in a hole and breaking a leg/hip than snakes.

Man, that is crazy. Almost sounds like it was stalking you out there. That swim back to the beach had to be pretty scary.

So what are the thoughts on these snake bite venom extraction kits? I know the old school method of cutting yourself with a knife or razor has been determined to probably do more harm than good, but the suction based extraction systems this guy used seems like it wouldn't hurt and could certainly help. I wear snake boots, but now I'm wondering if I should carry one of these kits or at least have one in the truck, especially when I'm hunting here in Texas. I'm not sure I buy what the doctor supposedly said about him dying if he didn't use the kit, but it does seem reasonable to believe that it helped lessen the damage by sucking out some venom.
