Moose is incredible, but the last elk burger I ate was a shore lunch grilled up on the banks of the Madison River out of Ennis MT. Thanks for taking me back there talking about elk....

I might put in for that today.

Glad to hear the opinions on cow elk. Thought about it for a while, and put in for both the bull and cow firearm hunts. Figured it would be well worth the meat, although to be honest, if I were drawn I wouldn't know step two to save my life.

would be a good time i am sure of that. cant eat the horns and odds of being drawn for an out of state cow tag is not terribly bad.

Lots of reputible elk guides in eastern KY that have really good success rates. If I get drawn,Im going to hire a guide, cow or bull.

I am thinking hard about doing that myself. I'd just like to have the "problem" of having to plan the hunt. This is only my second year of applying.

I should start working on my bow skills (and equipment) so that I can boost my odds. My bow isn't really up to snuff for elk.

Believe me, no guide is needed. When I drew, it was a cow tag, and you could take her with a bow during bow season, or hunt the firearm season, or the last bow season. I took a cow that probably dressed about 600lbs. I bet I passed at least 10 different bulls, 5x5s or better within 40 yds, and had a monster 8x8 two days in range. Seen hundreds of Elk, not near as wild as western Elk. Most of the Elk are on coal mine property, they give you a free permit and map. They even came and helped me load my elk with a loader. The least amount of work Ive ever done packing an Elk out. The Bull tag is a LONG shot, cow archery is a ball!

If I could change my choices I would have put in for both cow tags...
