NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Newtown residents have rejected a budget that included money for extra school security in the wake of the December school shootings.

Voters turned down the $72 million school budget by 482 votes and rejected the $39 million town government budget by 62 votes Tuesday. Nearly 4,500 residents voted on the plans, which would have increased spending by 4.7 percent next fiscal year.

Officials put an extra $1 million in the school and town budgets to hire extra police officers and unarmed security guards to put in each of Newtown's seven schools. The plan was spurred by the shootings that killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

First Selectwoman Patricia Llodra says she's not sure what message voters were sending. She says officials will revise the budget.

Conspicuously absent from the article is WHERE the extra money is coming from..... Perhaps A TAX INCREASE....???

Out of 72 Million ONE million of that budget or 1/72 was for "added security" and the article tries to tie that as reasoning for rejecting the budget.

Shoddy journalism at best...more likely an obvious case of agenda driven writing.

Liberals are amazed that they cannot loot and pillage in the wake of a disaster. Can't let a crisis go to waste...

Wow, $72,000,000 school budget? How big are their schools to only have 4,500 residents to vote?

So they need $143,000 per school for security? Seems a little steep to me.

That's pretty interesting right there. I hate to group the whole town into the same category, but it makes them look pretty hypocritical.

Perhaps they are waiting on proposed legislation that will simply ban guns from the city. That'll stop all that nasty crime.

They rejected the increase of 5.25% in the OVERALL budget, they did not reject the "added security".

Think of this. They put in the "added security" as the "whipped cream" on the budget to try to sell the 5.25% increase. The voters saw though it and turned it down.

The liberals are now going to blame the "added security", the NRA, and gun owners for their budget failure.

Unarmed guards? Why bother?
Why are we trying so hard to develop artificial intelligence when we should be trying to cure natural stupidity.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. They should have ALL voted to turn that pile o crap down.
