For the past two weeks I have gone below Cheatam dam and have caught nothing but skipjack...Did I miss the prespawn?

Last year I got into them in early April, but I think it was a warmer winter. Water temp below the dam was 59 on Monday.

Then you have the yahoos that caught 420 and got busted last month...was that the prespawn?

Confused a little... If you're talking about rockfish, they don't spawn in waters around here. They are not native to this area. They have to be stocked to survive.

Even though they don't reproduce here, they go through the motions.

It was a lot warmer last year and steady temps not this 25 degree up and down crap every few days. They still might if the weather stays consistent. We always watched for when the dog wood trees would bloom out fully as are tell to start going to cheatham. As far as the fish bust I think those was stripes not rockfish...

I've seen rockfish spawn below the dam up close was pretty neat. One big fat female floating up top on her side with about 50 little males swimming all over her... Don't know if they actually are ever successful but they certainly go through the motions...

So you're talking about white bass and not stripers (rockfish)?

From my experience, white bass (stripe) spawn earlier than stripers do. Back when I fished below Old Hickory a lot, the big female stripe would start running in late February or early March, if the winter didn't hang on too long. Stripers wouldn't start showing until late March on in to April.

We apparently don't have enough free flowing river runs that have a hard rock bottom for the striper spawn to be productive around here. At least that's what I've read. I've also read where that isn't a problem on the Coosa River that feeds Lake Weiss down in Alabama. They have a 30 fish limit. Yep, 30.

44, you are catching white bass( commonly called striped bass by locals), but true striped bass are rockfish.

Actually, white bass are commonly called stripes in TN, and rockfish are actually striped bass.

scn is right,.....thats why i dont use the name striped bass around here.
you tell a feller along the bank that you caught some 30+ lb striper down the lake and he will give you a funny look..
thats why i only use the east coast name rockfish

Rockfish, stripers, stripe bass, and salts, all the same fish but in Tenn people tend to call them rockfish. Regardless these fish CAN have a successful spawn if they have the right current(steady level for several miles), right water temp, and some luck.

In my neck of the woods a striper and a rockfish is the same thing. A stripe is a white bass.
