I've hunted a few afternoons but haven't stayed until dark. What time are they going to roost? I passed a place I hunt just down from my house after work today and saw birds. Ran home and grabbed my stuff and was there at 5:30. Saw 3 Jakes (could have killed 2 that were 15 yards away) but there's one long beard and several hens. They went to a pipeline and the jakes and some hens went one way and the longbeard and two hens went another. Saw them walk in the woods and it was 6:40 and I had to leave without hearing them fly up. Gonna go back in the morning for an hour or so before work but wondering how much further they may have gone before roosting.

I have always heard that they usually fly up when the sun has gone down over the horizon. Of course, on a cloudy/rainy day, that's hard to tell. I would assume 20 minutes or so before first dark.

You should be able to get close.

Good luck!

Got in there this morning and while walking in one of the Jakes gobbled at 5:23. He has a full gobble and the only way I knew it was a Jake was because of seeing him yesterday afternoon. The longbeard started gobbling at 5:45 and i was set up maybe 100-150 yards away. He gobbled and sounded like he was still in the tree until 6:20. Didn't hear him fly down but no gobbling after that. Sat tight until 7:00 and had to leave. Hopefully my son can kill him this weekend.

Yeah, seems to be around 7:30ish right now in West TN. Seems like they'll fly up with a little more light than they'll fly down. A factor that might affect fly up time is whether you are talking a field edge or the woods, where it will be darker.

Killed one right at sunset on Easter Sunday and he was strutting looking for that hen to roost with. There were hens in a holler across a power line cut, and they flew up to roost about 5 min after I killed my tom. It was a clear sunny day

I roosted on last Saturday. He went up, I marked in my mind the tree he was in, and left. it was right around 7:30.
