I guess we are a part of the “extremists.”

Obama himself claimed, ”The American people are trying to figure out how can something have 90 percent support and yet not happen.”

Well, about 90% of total counties in the US were won by Romney in 2010, and yet the enormously overpopulated 10% of urban counties sealed Obama's victory.

Another reason I say that state electoral votes need to be alloted on a 1 vote per county basis. Each county gets 1 electoral vote awarded to the candidate that wins the majority of individual votes in that county.
Win 50% + 1 of a State's counties, you win the State.
That way NYC, Chicago, LA can't dictate terms to the rest of their respective States, and the rest of the country.

I like your way of thinking.

Or why not just let the popular vote rule? You always here it said that "Every vote counts", well it doesn't the way the system currently is. At least every vote isn't equal.

The electoral college is the only thing saving us from a total, communist tranformation. The progressives push for the popular vote for a reason.

Hunter 257

Our country is NOT a true democracy ruled by popular vote ON PURPOSE. Every single time popular vote has been tried it has resulted in tyranny and dictatorship.

Picture this. Popular vote....
City people decide that people outside the cities are backward and livestock ranching is cruel. It is put to a vote.
100% of the vote outside the cities goes against it, a majority of the city dwellers vote for it.

Guess what.... Livestock has just been outlawed.

Or more likely..... City dwellers have run their cities into bankruptcy through bad management/policy. A candidate runs on the platform of making the rest of the country bail out the cities. Other cities look at their looming financial crisis and push the bail out candidate. Guess what.... the high population density cities just voted themselves unlimited spending at the expense of people in other locations.

With our representative republic, there is a layer between mob rule (pure democracy) and the rights of the citizens.

In pure democracy, the citizens can vote to outlaw old honky white men and if they get 51% of the vote, it is LAW.

The examples you gave are potential negatives for allowing popular vote to rule absolutely in every type election but the current system already allows the people in big liberal cities to elect the President and basically our votes don't count. There aren't enough of us to counter them because their votes have been weighted with the electoral vote system so they always win. President osama just barely won by popular vote but won by a landslide in the electoral vote. I know what you are saying but when I see such a mismatch between popular vote and the electoral vote in a Presidential election it frustrates me.

There does need to be some change made to the Electoral College. At present, it does allow the population of the large urban centers to unfairly influence an election, and this is a situation never envisioned by the founders. I don't think 1 county, 1 electoral vote is necessarily best, but I can see that perhaps the system of awarding each states electoral votes based on percentage of vote a candidate gets might be better. There are 2 or 3 states that do it this way now.

The electoral college was never supposed to be a "winner takes all" state tally.

If they were counted as intended, we'd still be on track. Also, the number of House representatives are no longer tethered to population. Each used to represent about 5000 people. Now they represent much more and the # of HOR votes and representation has been frozen.

There is also the issue of Gerrymandering and counting illegals in the census.

Face it, We've totally screwed this country up
