Finally found my first middle TN morels today. Most were in a river bluff area, generally located near the bases of massive trees. But on the way out down a powerline cut, I happened upon a nice yellow morel right out in the middle of the grass. Started scanning and there were quite a few.

Made this short vid so folks could get a taste of what to look for:

Plink, I actually was thinking of you while I was in the woods. There is no doubt that you have the Shroom Eye, as well-evidenced by all your fungi photos. You just don't have the right shrooms.

When I was south of the plateau, I was quite convinced that they simply don't show up as often in that area. Not sure how your area compares, but it's probably a factor.

You just may need to drive on over here.

there is one that might be considered a look-alike but is not deadly, but can make some people sick. It's called the false morel and when you cut the stem open its not hollow. Morels are hollow. Also the false morel looks more like a brain than a sponge. I have never found one and they really don't look much like morels from the pics I have seen. So no worries, if you find a morel there is no mistaking it, they are safe to eat. Just cook em first

Fox, you need to go for it. Morels fall into a group of four or five that are considered "Foolproof", meaning that if there are any lookalikes, they will be more inedible/nasty tasting than toxic.

Even the most uneducated of us are able to ID a morel. Jump on in, the water is delicious!
