I sold my first outdoor story in 1959. I have been around the reporting game a long time. Never, ever, have I seen such sloppy reporting as I have regarding the Boston bombing. It is just deplorable. CNN is the absolute worst!

Do they not teach anything in J-school anymore?

Accuracy is not as important as getting out there early and framing the story in a way that can benefit their agenda.

Reporting of news is gone like the Dinosaur. Exploiting the news is where the money is today

Accuracy is no longer required. As long as you put out your station/publication's view of the events out first you win.

NO. What they do teach is how to convey the writers opinion into a story in order to sway or form the reader/viewers opinion.

Several years back a study was done with outcoming journalism students. I wish I could find the study for accuracy of years but the graduates were asked in a survey what they hoped to achieve with thier careers. Up until the early 70's most replied something like "to be able to report a story with accuracy".

Well from the 70's on, their answers changed to something like "to be able to change the worlds views with subject matter".

The parallel to this is the time frame of when universities became indoctrination tanks rather than facilities of higher learming. Accuracy and professionalism in journalsim is gone.

I took a journalism class in the late 70's. One of the papers I wrote was so red lined that it was totally opposite of what I intended to mean.

Could at least spell it right. It is dino sour.

I recal one J-class. The only thing you had to remember was W-W-W-W-H. Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. Those had to be 100% accurate or you got an F.

An inverted pyramid was used with the main facts at the top. That way, a story couold be edited for space from the bottom. I proably cut a thousand inches of AP and UPI wire copy when I was a sports editor. Could never do that now.

Thankfully I write a lot of nostalgic fiction. I don't have to pay much attention to writing "tight" anymore. It was tough when you were told you had three inches of space and nine inches of copy. A column inch was gold to a newspaper reporter. I thought I was in Heaven when I got 12-inches above the fold on the front page. Somewhere, I still have a copy of that paper.

That is the outdoor writer creed, not a newspaper reporter or any reporter supposedly conveying facts to the public. Don't confuse reporting with writing. 95% of the awards Ihave won for journalism were for writing, not reporting. I hate reporting. That is why I do so little of it. But I can when I want to. R Simms does it better. \:\) When it comes to fiction, I do it better.

Equally deplorable was the number of people here and elsewhere eagerly lapping it up and posting and commenting on it as fact. That's one of the major reasons why CNN and the others continue to get away with it.

More on the phenomenon, of which the Boston bombings is only the most recent example.

I agree but this is not a news agency so people are not expected to adhere to certain standards when it comes to veracity.

There is no way anyone should believe anything reported by any news agency period, over any length of time. If you weren't there, you do not and will not know what happened, period.

How accurate is the media?

LOL

Reuters published George Soros' Obituary today. We can conveniently fill in the proper dates when the event actually arrives.

O'Reilly had a retired teacher from the Harvard J-school not too long ago and he asked him that very question.

The guy answered that they don't teach that any more but push liberal-progressive agenda.. That's why he retired and got out.
