Its spring and starting to get warm. Birds are singing and flowers are starting to pop out. But half my employees are going off the deep end. They pretty much stopped working and then get all puffy when I call them on it. Now I have to go through all the extra trouble of documenting every single thing because when you live in Memphis you know what is next. The Card. sorry had to rant a minute.

I learned a very valuable business lesson while owning a company in Memphis. Never hire someone you can't fire, and I don't mean because they are too valuable to the company. I'll never get mail in Shelby County again. Ever.

Question, what's "the card" and I think I know.

Now, I just went through and still going through a bs situation but a good friend and attorney gave me great advice.

" 90% of all employee problems / complaints come from people you should have never hired in the firste place or should have fired first issue"

Now my problem is, there is all this hubbub of unemployment and a huge workforce wanting / needing to be hired BUT no one wants to work.
Big difference in being employable and wanting a job and wanting to work.

GOID LUCK!!!!

From the experience of living in Memphis for 28 years and working in Memphis for 13 years, the card that he is referring to is the race card. People in Memphis are stuck back in the 60s on race relations and I don't see it changing ever because people can't get over the past. That is just like changing the names of the 3 Confederate parks. I could go on and on and on and on but I must stop before I get upset.

Most people do not appreciate the fact that they have a job, it is expected. I am lucky to work for a privately owned company that is growing, the owners continue to invest in the company and do their best to take care of their employees. When times are hard they still give raises and bonuses. I make it a point to thank them every year because I know most people "expect" a raise annually.

BINGO!

First sentence is spot on and I have the luxury of working for a company you described- and it's a not for profit to boot.

If you know what you are doing as a manager, there is very little need to get to this point...several points in this thread are spot on too.

Hire the right people and reap reap the benefits. Hire the wrong people, and you can still get rid of them as long as you document, document, document...good HR and legal support in a corporate environment are critical. Smaller companies can still get it done...remember it is a marathon more so than a sprint. Yes, the instant gratification of firing someone on the spot can be good for you, but can also be devastating for the team...sometimes not though...

I've done both in my career working in Memphis..it's all a part of it.

Ahh, the Utopian theory. In a perfect world, my friend, in a perfect world. The vast majority of businesses don't have HR departments or attorneys on retainer. The real world for most business owners can't afford a marathon. The "if you know what you're doing as a manager" works best when when you're managing for someone else. Totally different animal when you're wearing every hat that needs wearing.

Having a good paper trail will help. I've always remembered some good advice once told to me by of all people, one of those seminar training sessions my old work place use to send us to. The guy said,"If it's not in writing, then it never happened". You need dates and specific actions written down.

Why do you think I was so happy to sell my business, retire and move from Memphis after living there 27 years??? I opened my first business there 39 years ago and I saw it get worse and worse over time. Young guys who never got to see how it really was 39 years ago think things in Memphis today are "normal" and that's the way it always was and part of the job.

There are still great people out there that are some of the best workers you will ever find and they reject "the card" and always work on their own two feet. The sad thing is for each of the great workers there are dozens more that were TAUGHT to use "the card" every time and all the time no mater what. Another sad thing is people have learned to accept as being part of the job, it's should never be that way. That's not the way King wanted it.

Wasted words Wildcat. My experience in Memphis was over twenty years ago. I think the disconnect is more in the corporate world versus the small business world. Corporate management isn't the same as small business management. I'm not going to get any farther in this.

I know. I retired and left Memphis 12 years ago and it's been a great time since.

Thanks for all the advise guys.Been doing this for a few years but it does get frustrating. Todays corporate world is a lot different then a few years ago at least in my company. You used to count on someone covering your backside but not any longer. HR makes you jump a lot of hoops and there is a lot of extra work involved in getting rid of someone. At least getting rid of them AND having your backside covered when they come after you. For the most part my folks can do a good job. But every once in a while a few get behind and then a few more and then once the crap catches up to them they circle the wagons and its all my fault and I'm playing "favorites". The workforce in Memphis has a lot to be desired. so its a little easier said then done to find quality employees.

Sounds like company got a little slow and had to lay people off. No race card issue there.

My company is all contracted workers with commission only based work (including myself). I don't have these problems... thankfully. At the same time, their earning potential can be really high over time. I have one contractee who is on track to make 3x what I will make this year.

I feel for you man, I lived in Memphis for 40 years, glad I am gone from there. It has gotten a lot tougher in the firing process since back when Uncle Willy became Mayor and hired his ex-con girl friend to help run Memphis. Oh yeah, cant leave out the Ford brothers either, between this bunch running government in Memphis and or having the influence in decisions the way a buisnessman could run his buisness, hire and fire for good reasons has been pushed out of the way.
Memphis went to big for the wrong reasons, only wanted to tax base but didnt want to put back in to help the people that they incorparated, pretty much just said "PAY UP or get out and I will give money to one of my friends so I can make more money and control more"

if you fire them for a valid reason then they cant draw govt funded welfare/unemployment . lay them off and its couch time with 2 or 3 years of free dough .
