Just prior the season I was seeing and had photos of large groups of mature birdd (8-10 per group). Opening weekend, I seen 3 Mature Birds, 1 last weekend now none.

However, I am now seeing large groups of Jakes. I had encounters with 28 jakes this past weekend ranging in groups from 4-5, to one group of 10. I am sure I seen some more than once as I am hunting about 200 acres.

The question I have is the following: Can such large groups of jakes actually push gobblers out of an area. I would assume this could happen with this many, just wanted to hear the opinions of others.

sounds like you are gonna have a GREAT season next year that many around.

and yes they can push them out of an area without question if the jakes are aggressive.

i watched 3 jakes run a longbeard out of a field.

i have seen a longbeard stand at the edge of a field and not come out because of a group of jakes. He wanted no part of them.

True. Thing is, you can't really scare'em off. They're hardly spooky, totally uneducated, and don't really take any hints you throw at them to move on to safer places. The only way to get rid of them so they don't mess with your big birds involves a BOOM sound.

If the jakes don't have the hens then they ain't dominating nothing but subordinate gobblers. More than likely your large group of mature birds have split up and divided the hens so to speak.

I believe that large groups of jakes will run off gobblers, but I don't think that is the sole reason. Turkeys have a big range, and that may have been them big gobblers area that time of year. They probably just moved on, along with the jakes taking over.

I think there are different types of jakes. Some jakes are what I call baby jakes that hardly gobble or strut. You also see jakes that gobble and strut with hens like longbeards. I have seen big jake flocks seemingly ignore hens, and just fight amongst themselves and with any longbeard. They are kinda like mean gangs if you no what I mean.
I think alot of this has to do with the ages of the jakes, like some may be a couple of months older, but im no biologist. It could also have to do with a lack of longbeards around.
