I just had a 2.5 maybe 3.5 yr old buck come by with about 4" of new growth on his head. Following him was a 1.5 yr old with about the same but much thinner. Seems early for it especially on Catoosa. Anybody else seen any?

Haven't seen one yet, but it is very plausible to see new growth at this time of year. Anytime after mid-April...

I have saw bucks still in hard antler the first wknd in May, and have saw bucks with 4+ inches of visible velvet new growth in the middle of April while Turkey hunting! They vary greatly

I agree with Winchester. I have seen hard-antlered bucks and velvet bucks in different turkey seasons. varies every year. I saw the first buck turkey hunting on Saturday in Fayetteville TN. He had about 3 or 4 inches of growth.

Generally, there is at least a month variation in the start date of new antler growth for a local buck population.

I just pulled a trail cam card and had a 4-pt yearling buck which had still NOT shed his 2012 antlers as of 04/06/2013.

Your bucks must be born at a funny time of year.

I would love to know if there is some correlation between the number of "growing days" for antlers and final antler size. It is known that not all bucks grow antlers for the same number of days. Some start early and some start late. Some stop growing early and some stop growing late. But do all antlers grow at the same rate per day? In essence, do large antlered bucks simply grow more antler per day than other bucks or is it more a factor of growing antlers for more days?

Good ? BSK, as the shedding and regrowing dates seem to vary greatly from deer to deer and area to area!

Haven't seen any yet . Usually start seeing them in mid may... mainly because they have grown a little bit bigger. and easier to see them from some what of a distance.
