A buddy talked me into using the natural lump charcoal instead of pressed and it really does make your food taste better. No weird chemical flavor.

last week I ran out and didn't have time to make any more So I went cave man and piled up some oak twigs/sticks and made a little camp fire in the grill. Tossed in a couple sticks of well seasoned oak firewood once it got going and then put the lid on to calm things down to a cooking temp.

Wow.. came out really good. A cross between char grilled and smoked.

Give it a try sometime if you run out of charcoal.

I too discovered by accident that oak or hickory is great to use. We added some wood when were out hunting because we were short charcoal and I thought the meat was marinated but it was the wood flavor. We now use some oak, hickory, apple or cherry with charcoal every time.

I wonder how crepe myrtle would work, because that's the only wood I have left...LOL

i have a ton of oak and hickory hardwood flooring. i wonder if i could cut it into 2 or 3 inch pieces and use it. it is solid 3/4" wood not a veneer or laminate. it has been stained, so i dont know if that would effect the taste
