My son drives a '95 Eclipse, well past it's days of glory, but he's tight with a buck and will drive it until it literally falls apart, so good for him.

The struts on the hatch don't support it any longer, so I picked up a (pricey) set to replace them. He's been supplementing his old struts with a stick. Well, we took off the old struts alright, adn I gotta tell you, I was truly amazed at how heavy that hatch lid is! I mean it's 50+ lbs, easily. The old struts still had quite a bit of pressure, actually, but not enough to hold that dude up.

I took a few moments to clean out the channels on the side of the hatch, which were pretty mildewy and nasty. While I was scrubbing, I bumped the prop stick, and the only part of me that was under the hatch was my right hand lying on the car. That sucker guillotined me quicker than a French monarch. I thought my world had turned upside down! Yanked my hand out and tucked it into my chest, while my son stood wide-eyed and pale. After the first waves of nausea passed, I check, and there was a good trench of skin gone. What saved me from totally crushing my hand, praise the Lord, is that one of the old struts was lying across the hatch opening. If that dude had dropped enough to have latched close, I don't know WHAT I'd have done, but I do reckon I'd be in the hospital now hearing options.

Well, better me than my son, and it did get me pretty good waiter service for the rest of the evening. It's still swollen, but other than a inch and a half long blood-filled trench in the back of my hand, I'm in good shape. But gotta say, whewwwww!

Glad you're ok. Sounds like that smarted something awful.

Please warn your TNDeer family if you and Crappie Luck ever get together to work on a project, as I'm pretty sure that'll be the day the earth falls off its axis.

That could have been bad. I know how your son feels.

My Dad was working on my car many many years ago. He was standing at the front of the car, engine running, and propped up on the fan shroud and curled his fingers under. The fan blades caught the knuckles on both hands. He was lucky like you. Missing skin and lot of blood and mostly just hurt pride.

Good thing you left that old strut laying there. I had a similar thing happen with my wife's 1996 Ford Taurus except it was the hood. I was changing the oil and of course had the hood up. The hood on that car had no prop rod as many cars do, but was held up entirely by the two struts. Well they had gotten weak over time but I wasn't aware as they had always held. I was under the car lossening the drain plug with my left hand up over the top of the fender. As I gave the wrench a jerk, I shook the car and the hood slammed down and closed completely shut on my 4 fingers. I came up fast as a bullet thinking that my hand was ruined and jerked as hard as I could and pulled my fingers out. But the hood was closed dwon flush with the fenders. Thankfully the hood was flexible enough that I didn't cut my fingers off. I can definitly relate to the pain you experienced. I never trust those struts anymore and always leave something solid to interfer with a falling hood when changing oil now.

Shew! What a lucky man!
I was helping a boy in high school that his car had died. So being the well prepared redneck I parked my truck in front of his car, hooked up my jumper cables. Told him to hook his side and give it a minute. He tried to crank, and nothing, tried again, nothing, I thought this is a brand new battery, what the heck.
Walked towards his car to look at it, and before I could his battery exploded. Sent that battery acid everywhere, luckily didnt get on me, but its got me extra careful now

That scares me just reading about it Keith. That dude is going to be sore but it could have been much worse. Prayer lifted for a speedy recovery.

Yeah, that one really scares me because you could end up blinded. You were just lucky it didn't hit your eyes. My cousin had some splash in his eyes as a kid when his Dad was charging a battery. He had to wear an eye patch for a while but recovered fully. I almost blew a battery up a few years ago doing a stupid trick. I was taking the battery cables loose using a long double box end wrench 1/2 & 9/16 combo. The nut was rounded off so when I pulled on the wrench, it slipped on the nut and slammed down onto the opposite post of the battery. Well, let me tell you that wrench got HOT darned fast. I jumped back and was going to just let it go and take care of myself. My Father grabbed the wrench and tore it off getting his hand burned in the process. Ever since then I never loosen a battery cable with a wrench long enough to span across the posts AND I put my other hand down on top of the post so nothing can touch it. You can get hurt so fast working on cars and most all of it can be prevented if you just slow down and think "What can go wrong here".

I ended up troubleshooting a battery today for a woman at the church office. I've always thought about that battery explosion risk, but have never seen it happen.

I'll see about a pic, but other than the back of my hand being swollen, it doesn't look too bad. Figured it would be black and purple today. Nope. Plenty tender though.

Turns out the lack of flesh in the back of the hand mean's not a lot of bruising or bleeding. Not that I needed or wanted to know that, especially not...

...wait for it...

You will be surprised at how much bruising you may end up with. Don't freak out if the palm of your hand gets super sore. I am glad it wasn't any worse.

Ouch, looks pretty swollen. Now draw two angry eyeballs over it and a nose and it will look like an angry face. ;\)

Aight, it's actually more painful today. Guess I had a day of grace period.

But don't worry, the trigger finger's still limber!
