I haven't seen or heard it yet but a couple days ago man said his four wheeler started smoking a little.

He changed the oil in it again yesterday and called me this morning and said it is knocking and smoking.

I don't know much about motors but it sounds like maybe a broken ring?
Maybe the knocking is the broken piece of ring on the piston?

Freaking sucks.
We have never had good luck buying used so I decided to not worry about it and buy a brand new 2013 Honda Rancher for him.

That worked good.

Guess we will find out today how good the warrenty is on them from Abernathy's.

Better be a non issue.

Reminds me of hee haw.... if it twernt for bad luck....

Rings, knocking sounds like wrist pin and possibly piston rod issue. Fingers crossed!

Is the knock in the top end or bottom end of motor?

Sounds like a Rod Bearing to me and hope it is rather than broke ring junking the piston walls

Wondering aloud here: if oil filter was installed backwards the top end would knock as the oil would be restricted to the valves.
Don't ask how I know.

I almost made that mistake once. Didn't realize 4-wheelers took a special oil.

They might request records to perform warranty work.

take it to the shop sounds like what is wrong with it to me,,
best way to fix it
or you could run it, let it smoke a lot right at the edge of your property so your neighbor can get the second hand smoke effect,,,,,
Okay, that was bad,

Yep. When I bought mine Honda the guy that owns the place drummed that very thing into my head before he would allow it off the show room floor.

Doesn't sound like a lemon. That's usually reserved for automobles and trucks, as far as I know, but when it comes to boats, atvs, cycles, tvs, refrigerators, etc., they tend to have low end warranties from the manufacturer, based on worst case.

A lot of times, it comes down to the dealer. They stand behind the customer, or they don't. Even that can get into a whole can of worms for all parties when it comes down to who pays.

Hope it works out for the best.

You know after man and my father in law carried it I wondered about the oil filter.
Man changed it day before yesterday but then I remembered it started smoking before he changed the oil.

Feel free to holler at your bil and beg for mercy if you are so inclined. \:D

They told him they would have to tear it all down and then call someone in to look at it to determine whether it was a defect or water.
Defect = covered
Water = we screwed

One thing I have heard about these motors is the pistons and valves are cheaply purchased, crankshaft, not so much.
