Bought one for the family. Was wondering what the pros/cons are of them.

Only problem I see is that you only bought one. Both my boys have one. My 4 yr old plays games and has a puzzle or two on it. My 7 year old has games as well as some learning tools (math) and he downloads a book (magic treehouse) every know and then.

My wife loves hers I got her last year. I took over her old original one.

I'd say there are only 2 drawbacks to the Fire:
1- The batteries go way faster than the original Kindle. I can read mine just as much as my wife, and she'll have to recharge hers every other day, while I'm once a week.

2- Not 100% sure on this, but it seems to have less device storage and stores more on "Cloud". But I Can't confirm that, it's juust what my wife seems to think.

My wife loved her original Kindle. Unfortunately the screen froze a year and a half in. Couldn't have been more babied. Never left the house, no kids around, she treated it like fine crystal.

You might consider a Square Trade warranty.

My wife had had one for year and half and likes it, my 5 year old daughter has pretty much taken it over now and loves it. Plays games, does some learning things on it.

Apparently, the wife will buy a ton of ebooks and slowly reduce your bank account.

They're nice to have.

That's exactly what my wife does.
I'll ask her "How much have you spent on Amazon lately?"
Her response "I've only bought a $5.99 book, $3.99, $7.99, $8.99, $3.99, $4.99, and a couple of $1 and $2 books... why?"
I totaled her books up in 2 weeks... just over $42.
I was pretty mad. She didn't think she was spending that much because they are little cheap books and if she would have bought the actual copy it would have costed more.
Especially since Christmas we've been on my income alone.
I love that she can read her books and I can play Black ops 2 but man she can spend some money on books.

Are there a way to "share" ebooks that you've paid for? Just wondering

I have read tons of free books.Downloaded lots of free Apps and games. If you turn off the kindle's WiFi when not using it the battery will last longer.Try to run the battery down pretty good before recharging ,then make sure to completely recharge before using again. It will extend your battery life.
Best Buy has Amazon gift Cards that I use for the few things I've bought.

Yes, I think you can "gift" books you've purchased to friends for 1-month.

My wife has the new Kindle HD and loves it, My youngest has had her old one. It quit charging and was a couple months out of warranty, they replaced it for free!! Great customer service.

We got the otterbox protector for the daughters and hope to have no more issues. Now she wants an I-touch like her sisters, go figure!

Wife has the Fire HD and doesn't really like it as well as she does her older one. She says it's easier on her eyes to read books on the older one. All she uses the Fire HD for now, is when we go somewhere with free WiFi...she will download a bunch of games and such to play.

If you will be investing in Amazon products, hit up Kroger when they're doing their bonus points for gift cards. You can get 4x the points during these promotions, which adds up to very nice gas savings. Last Christmas I put off making our gift purchases until I went over to Kroger and picked up $200 worth of cards. The gas savings ended up being like $35 off that! Score! \:\)

One thing I like about the Kindle HD is you can buy a micro to standard HDMI cable and use your TV as a screen to watch movies and such.

I like mine and the only negative is that there aren't all that many apps.

My Wife's Fire had an annoying habit of freezing and after the second service call they replaced it, free, so yeah, good customer service and the guy on the other end of the phone knew his stuff.

Any apps that are compatible with Androids should work just fine.
