Comparison of 00 Buck (on the right) and #1 Buck from Federal "Flight Control" wadding (on the left) Is this supposed to support #1 being better? I'm not sure I'd agree based on this one target. The whole idea of a shotgun is that the pellets spread making a hit easier - this is no better than a slug. I suspect though that the wad deserves the credit for the extra tight pattern here rather than the size shot. Having said that, I've said for years that 00 buckshot is not really the best for home defense. It's large size makes it too likley to overpenetrate walls and leaves too many gaps in the pattern. #1 or my favorite #4 buckshot is going to be better for most situations. Honestly, if you are shooting at some criminal inside your home a heavy load with #4, 5 or 6 birdshot would be just as effective and way less likely to go through wall into a room where your family may be hiding. The pics are not apples to apples. Bear in mind, this is 6 yards distance. The group with the #1s is on the left, and has a flight control wad. The 00s on the right were fired from a shell with no flight control wad. The wad is what keeps the pattern so tight. You can see where the wad from the non-flight control group hit low and to the right in that target. The range is very close as well. On a 35 yard target, which even they admit is unrealistic inside a house, the #1 grouping is more spread out, but still all on target, and the 00 without the flight control wad only has 4 pellets on the target(meaning 5 went somewhere else). From this, the main thing I can see is, you need that flight control wad in a home defense round. I do not think it says anything better or worse about the #1 over the 00.
Well, it all depends on whether or not the shootout is at close range or not. I still worry about the possibility of over penetration with heavy buckshot and if they are bunched up together like this, penetration is going to be even more. The best shotgun load for defense is going to depend on so many things. The layout of your house can enter into it - what I mean is if the bedrooms are all in such a location that you would know where other family members are and how likely accessible they would be to an intruders path into the home. Still, these wads are a very interesting concept. I would like to have some as a component to work up some long range dove loads.
And for whatever it's worth, I currently have 2 3/4" #4 buckshot loads in my 12 gauge pump that sits in the corner beside the bed. Weighing all the possibilities, I figure it's as good a compromise as any.
you better make dang sure your shoot them dimes through an open cylinder bore, A Dime wont pass through a full choke.
Yeah, I was amazed the 1st time I tried to put a dime down a 12 gauge bore and it wouldn't fit through the modified choke of my Ithaca 37. Doesn't sound right but it is.

I like the sound of the 2" 12 gauge load the still has 9 00 buck in it. That would allow a couple more rounds in your mag tube.

I've heard that alot too Hunter257W, in a lot of places. 7-1/2's that wouldn't penetrate the wall into the next room, but would adequately dispose of any lifeform deemed a threat inside that room and several feet away with an unobstructed aim.
I was shot in 1979 at point blank with #5 high brass load... I think I would have to disagree... Stick with Buckshot for home defense, it does a better job... Just my 2 cents worth and some 40 odd pellets still in me.

I got excited when I saw those shorty 12 gauge shells too for the same reason you mention. My Mossberg 8 shot riot gun should hold at least 10. But I've read that they cause feeding issues with even pump guns. Of course you read a LOT of stuff on the internet condeming things when the real problem is human related. I'd still like to try some of them. If they work, you get a higher magazine capacity and lower recoil which means less recovery time for followup shots.
