Need to change the oil in my toyota pickup and am considering doing it myself to save a little money. Been a while since I have helped change the oil in a car but I know how to do it. Should I go and buy a new oil filter? Does this need to be done on every oil change? I figure by now I should probably do it, and what brand filter should I go with that is cost effective?

Always change the filter, and I always use Fram filters.

Thanks Andy
Guess I should also ask which brands I should avoid. Seems the 22RE can take almost anything but I don't want to put bottom of the barrel stuff in it. I can figure out the oil but not sure of the filter.

Use a Toyota filter and only a Toyota filter. I wouldn't put a fram filter on a lawn mower. Wix on everything else

Toyota only! Worked at a Yota dealer for many years (20yrs ago) and the Techs in the shop explained there's an anti drain-back valve in the Yota filter - keeps oil where it needs to be at startup. They were Techs - could have used anything they wanted and all swore by only Yota filters on a Yota.

Toyota Oil Filters Oil filters help protect your engine by trapping dirt and other contaminants while allowing the oil to flow to the engine. Genuine Toyota Oil Filters are designed specifically for your Toyota engine. Features of the Genuine Toyota Oil Filters include: •A bypass valve, which alleviates restricted oil flow in the event of a clogged filter.
•An anti-drainback valve, which prevents oil from draining out of the engine and into the oil pan, helping to protect your engine from increased wear during cold starts.
• A filter element which effectively filters contaminants and maintains the engine's lubrication capability during the maintenance interval. By comparison, a lesser quality filter element might clog during Toyota's recommended maintenance interval leading to engine wear, seizure or other problems. Some non-genuine oil filters do not meet all of Toyota's stringent specifications.

All oil filters have an anti drain back valve. Fram - the orange one - is the worse thing you can do to your engine. Purolater makes a very cost effective filter that does a great job.
There is a great site for oil. Go to bobistheoilguy.com You can read a lot about filters by just googling oil filters.
