I wondered when the state would bow up on the Feds over red snapper. The federal regs have cost the Gulf states millions in lost recreational fishing dollars. A lot of fishing guides have gone belly up because of the snapper set up. This topic bothers me as a biologist. The commercial fisherman are still allowed their take, and the recreational fishermen have watched their seasons and limits decline over the last ten years. Frankly, there aren't many people that will pay the cost of a charter trip knowing they can only keep 2 red snapper in season, and that season being very short to begin with.

You aren't kidding. My buddy in LA sold his bay boat and all but quit salt water fishing. We used to have 5-6 guys who would get together and fish snapper season every year but with a 2 fish limit and short season it wasn't worth trying to put it all together.

Those were some good times.

No doubt. I preferred fishing the marsh anyway for the specks and reds. Keith and I talked about him coming down for a tuna trip next time.

Wow, what timing, Magician! I was just chatting with a buddy at church this morning about fishing Venice, and the frustration with the barely-existent red snapper season. It is very much my intent to put a trip together for the guys here and haul down for some fishing, but I'm not sure when. Haven't spoken with Captain John in a long while. I wonder if a tuna trip this winter would be do-able... Be a really cool February trip!
