I should have at least carried the air rifle when I went to check my cam. Jumped the covey of quail again. They didn't all flush at once, took about 5-10 seconds for all of them to jump up. It was cool, they were all about 5 yards away or less. Maybe next year. At least I will enjoy the bob-white call during the spring and summer.

That's awesome. I used to hear the call of bob-whites all the time, until a sub-division popped up next to the farm....haven't heard one of them or a whip-poor-will since.

interestingly there is a nearby subdivision. They just have the right habitat outside of the development.

Thanks... it's not always about the kill, although they are near the top of my want to kill list. I enjoy seeing em regularly because I hear they are not too common in most of the state. And the call is great to hear. I know where 3 or 4 coveys live in the middle tennessee area. One I saw from the stand on public land, one is where I was talking about, another is not far from it, and yet another I heard a bobwhite call while wading down a creek smallmouth fishing last summer. I think the WMA where I hunt probably has a lot of coveys, the land seems to be managed well, lots of CRP, overgrown fence rows, thick understory, etc and I have already seen one covey in there.

Loss of quail has been a significant event in the hunting community.

To the best of my knowledge nwtf is starting a 10 year program to aid in habitat restoration for quail in Tennessee.

They figured they did a good job with turkeys, why not quail.

Something like impacting 300,000 or 300,000,000 acres. Can't remember the number off the top of my head.

it seems to me like overgrown fence rows and crp fields are good quail habitat. At least that is where I have seen quail.

Thats great places to find them. The nastier, thicker, "I dont want to go in there for a pot of gold," thats where they will be.
