A friend signed us up to take the CP class It is all going to be done in one day testing and shooting,
What do I need to take with me?
can I take more then one gun?
how many shells do I need to take?
How much shooting will we be doing?
Do I walk in with my gun and shells firt thing or leave them in the truck until after testing is complete?

Take 2 boxes of shells just in case you happen to need them. And yep, leave them in the truck until needed.

Take a pistol you can shoot accurately, and cheaply. I used a 22 cal. Ruger target pistol. Not what I would carry for defense though.

This may be way off... Since I don't know how the classes are set up here in TN. If this is suppose to be a 2 day course and they are doing it one day, I would pass on it. They caught some guys in SC skipping stuff in the class and charged the instructors and the people taking the class. I was told they threw the book at them. It's suppose to be a 2 day course in SC.

If this is not the case in TN then disregard.

10-4... Wasn't sure. SC was 8 hours class room and like 4-8 range time. Some instructors were doing it in 6-8 hours total. S.L.E.D. Was not happy with them.

Friend of mine helps his brother teach a class every Saturday.
He said they have dropped to 25 shots instead of 50 because nobody can get ammo.

He said he has seen some EXPENSIVE ammo shot in the last month or so.
They can't get anything else but the high end shells.

Took the course last year at Frontier Firearms in Kingsport.
Great people.
Take handgun you are comfortable shooting and 1 box ammo.
Take it in with you , unloaded of course. They will probably have a lock up for your guns.
Very important to transport the gun unloaded, no rounds in the magazine or anywhere within reach. Best to have ammo in trunk if possible.

Its wise to take the gun you plan to carry. At least thats what I was told when I took the class. And was told you dont want to shoot a perfect score. Im sure your instructor will explain.

no need in that. we rented a 22 that neither of us had shot and bought a box of 100 22lr shells. we both shot for less than the cost of 1 box of 40 cal. and we would've had to use 2 boxes of 40s for the class.

Why not want to post a perfect score?

And I don't meen this negative and I am no crack shot or sharp shooter, but if someone has to have two boxes of shells to qualify, they need not have a permit. jmo

Our instructor advised us to qualify with the firearm we would be carrying. He frowned on using a .22, unless that is what you definitely were planning on carrying.

And we shot 48 rnds, 6 strong hand, 6 weak hand, from 3,9,15, and 25 yds. At 25 yds, we had the option of firing all 12 rnds strong hand, which I gladly did. Our instructor was a very knowlegeable teacher, and was the police chief from a nearby county. Learned a lot in that 2 day class.

Your money
ID
paper and pen
100 rounds of ammo
Shooting 12 rounds at 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards.
The extra shells are in case you didn't do well the first round, you can shoot again. Good luck!

I would guess that you practice and use it for practice and not worry about score. I will tell you if you are practicing to carry for self defense or even offensive you will want to try different positions and events that you would not try if you were target shooting for score. If you are defending yourself a perfect score is a full mag in the bad guy with no rounds in bystanders and bad guy in the morgue.

I'd say this is best answer.

But from a safety stand point no ammo in class. We shot 48 when I did mine so unless Ur taking a 22 I'd say a box of 50 is plenty. Tn is 8 hr class 4 RM 4 range...best I remember reading... mine was 3.5 RM, hr drive to range and maybe 2 hr at range... no one failed although a few were scary to be around lol

Missouri requires 140 rounds fired !! 70/semi auto and 70/revolver with 40 of the 140 being your qualifying rounds....needless to say I as most shot 22lr.
It is 8hrs total here also but can be broken up into two days depending on instructor.
Good luck and stay safe !

My opinion, but if you post a perfect score, then if you ever have to use it, the prosecution can say "Why did you not try to wound Mr. Perpetrator, instead of killing him. From the looks of your qualification target, you should have been able to place your shots anywhere you wanted"

It might not make a difference in a criminal case, but in a civil suit, it could wind up costing you.

That argument may be able to be made either way. They could argue that if you could shoot better then maybe he would have only been wounded instead of kilt. Either way, when we decide to carry and use deadly force, we have to be ready to accept the consequences of our actions.

I just did mine a month ago at Guns and Leather in Hendersonville. I rented their gun since .45 is hard to come by and isn't cheap. Used a Glock 9mm and bought the ammo at the same time I rented the gun. Total rental and ammo was something around $20.00

Take your drivers licence, Fill out the online TN handgun carry permit application and take that with you, you will need the number so they can update the application. I got my permit in about 3 weeks after fingerprint.
