I would not use anything black but thats just me. Think how hot you get in a black shirt versus a light color shirt.

the one I'm leaning towards is the plantra vented tube. it is expensive but appears to be good quality.
homemade stakes or buy bamboo ones?

I get the 5/4 treated decking boards and rip them to make my on stakes.

I'd use the corragated drainage pipe from lowes or some where. It comes in variuos diameters...I may not understand exactly what your needing tho.. I would think that would cause a problem when the tree gets too big for the pipe. Tree tubes are designed to disinigrate. I dont think thats a problem,they would just bust the tube,heck,trees can move rocks out of the way.
They won't bust through it unless it's precut. Every see what happens when you tie a wrag or a piece of cord around a tree limb?

I've used the Plantra ventilated tubes. I planted about 135 trees 2 years ago using these tubes and the increased growth compared to trees I had planted 2 years before with no tubes has to be seen to be believed. These tubes are a faded orange color which doesn't get nearly so hot as the black drainage tube which could kill some of your trees.
One thing I've learned about planting a large number of trees is not to take shortcuts. I had two previous plantings where I tried to go cheap and I lost nearly every tree. The 3rd time around, I went all the way with Moisture Mizer, time-release fertilize, tree tubes and stakes. As I said above it is well worth the extra expense. Look at it this way. It takes a significant portion of a person's life to establish trees that will produce enough fruit or nuts to feed deer. How many times do you want to restart because you were too cheap to buy everything you needed and the tres died? And while we are talking cheap, I'll go ahead and recommend the fiberglass stakes sold by http://www.wildlifegroup.com/growsupplies They are expensive but after spending a lot of time replacing/making wood stakes as they continuiously rot, I should have just bought these to start with. I bought a bundle recently and when a stake rots, they will be replaced with fiberglass from now on.

To answer your question about length of the tubes, I used the 48" version. Not sure which is the best. The 60" might be best for fastest growth since the tubes works because the tree is reaching for the bright light at the top end. This would probably mean an average tree would be in the tube a year longer maybe where it would benefit from tha faster growth rate another year? But that's just guessing.
