Ok got a question about how trees grow. A buddy made a comment about how he loosens the straps up on his ladder stands to prevent the tree from breaking them and lifting them off the ground. Ok I understand the strap part but told him he was full of it if he thinks the tree trunk grows up and would carry his stand with it. Trees don't grow up from the trunk like that do they? I have seen old names carved in trees that were up eight feet or so but always around water so I assumed ground erosion not tree growth upwards like that.

You are correct. Trees do not grow 'up' like your buddy thinks.

Throw this at him...If trees did grow 'up' like he thinks, we could walk under a lot of old fences that are nailed to trees without having to duck. \:\)

Wow. I've actually had to loosen my straps on a ladder stand and let the top back down a couple or three inches before b/c the top section had pulled loose from the ladder section. This was on a poplar tree. This was only after a couple of years of being hooked up too.
