Lots of deer in my pics over the past month or so are looking very similar. When I asked about it, someone suggested that it may be from the animals digging at their necks with their back hooves to scratch the fleas and ticks and pulling out chunks of hair. Unless someone can come up with a different explanation with some proof, I think that is probably what is going on. I know the ticks and chiggers have eaten me up this year (but I don't look quite that bad!).
