I have purchased my sportsman license on line and printed it.
I see my Big Game Harvest Log but no kill tag.
Do we not have to tag our kills anymore?
if so with what?

TN hunters have not been required to attach a tag to a big game animal for the last couple of years. The requirement went away when we started the online license purchases where licenses and tags would be printed on computer paper rather than the waterproof paper used in agent machines.

The kill tag has been replaced with the harvest log.

There is not a requirement to fill this log out prior to transporting the animal. The current regulations require the animal to be checked out by the end of the calendar day at a TWRA checking station, online, or on the new mobile app. Proof of it being checked in on approved forms (including the electronic version on the app) are required for taking the animal to a taxidermist or meat processor.

If you have any specific questions on the process, please give me a call at (615) 781-6580 and I'll be happy to work through them with you.

As I stated, you haven't been required to put a tag on a deer for the past couple of seasons. And, there is no longer a temporary kill tag to put on one.

Please read my above post, and if you are still unclear, give me a call at the posted number.

That's interesting. I contacted the Nashville office last season to inquire about not having a tag on my kill while driving 60 miles an hour down the road to the processor. She told me to explain to the TWRA agent what I was doing and there shouldn't be a problem. It was never mentioned a tag was not required on the deer. No one in my hunt club or anyone else I hunted with was aware of this either.

I am constantly amazed at just how good our support staff is at answering questions. They bat a VERY high percentage. But, like me, they aren't perfect. And, sometimes, the questions can be very hard to decipher.

Sometimes it pays to get a copy of the Hunting Guide and read through it. There is a lot of good information in one. A call into me at (615) 781-6580 will usually get you an answer if there is one. But, rest assured, I can't/won't promise that it is 100% correct even after 36 years of this. But, if I get you in trouble with a wrong answer, I will testify in court in your behalf if it goes that far.

SCN: I must be a little dense because I do read the Hunting Guide. I went back to last years and on page 20 under "Tagging and Checking Stations" it says "The permanent game tag must remain with each carcass until final processing." And that means we do not have to leave the tag on the deer physically? Carcass?

The regulation use to have verbiage in it stating that the tags had to be attached to the animals. When we went to the online system where folks printed out tags on computer paper, they no longer had waterproof paper and tags blowing off were almost guaranteed. We took the requirement of attaching the tag out of the regulations.

In the past couple of years you were OK with a tag that had been filled out in your pocket. If the carcass was left with a processor, the tag was left with the carcass.

There was no requirement for you to have a tag on your deer as you went up the road. Sorry you were not given 100% correct information.

Starting with spring turkey, there isn't even a requirement for you to fill out the harvest log before transporting. The Deer/turkey must be checked out by one of the three methods by the end of the calendar day. If you are checked after that check in, you will need to be able to show proof of that you have completed the check in process.
