I have a chainlink fence I want to plant this year, and I know folks often plant pole beans on them. Any advice? I'm mostly wondering how far apart to plant them on a fence and what varieties grow best here and taste best. I don't can veggies - I just plant about a dozen different veggies - enough for my family/friends/neighbors to eat on.

Thanks so much in advance.

pole beans need height, yes they will spread side to side, so with that in mind they will over grow each other which will make it hard to pick through
If possible, plant away from the fence using a POLE, or just plant a few and far between if you want them on a fence
Also if you put them on a fence, watch out for them being burned from a hot fence. If you also like, put two post in ground, say 10ft apart,,,run twine, not string, pole to pole several runs then when beans come up and start to run, feed to the TWINE, they will grow and climb the twine.

Interesting. My fence is only 5 feet high, and I don't have room to plant them anywhere but on the fence. I have read I can trim the top for them to spread out instead of up. How do I keep them from being burned? It's definitely in the sun a good portion of the day. Thanks for your help.

any of the 1/2 runner beans will do good on a chain link fence.
I like the Ky white 1/2 runner green beans.

You can also grow cucumbers on a chain link fence.

If your ground is ready ?? I planted snow peas a couple of weeks ago that will climb up the chain link. Later in the year when the peas are done I'll put some tomatoes in to tie to the fence. The peas put nitrogen in the soil that the tomatoes love. When your peas are done just cut them off and leave the roots in the ground.
