Ok so the old lady and myself decided to make a trip to Nashville the 9th and 10th of March just to get away from the great city of Memphis for a little while. I was wondering if you guys could recommend a hotel that is in a decent area in the 60-100 a night range. Also can you give me some ideas of things that are must dos in Nashville.

I usually stay at holiday inn express on west side of Nashville. I think it's on Charlotte Pike but not sure. Nice hotel, and decent breakfast. Also there is a Drury Inn on briley pkwy close to opry mills that's real nice.

I think last time I stayed in one next to the dukes of hazard museum and was later told that was a bad neighborhood. That was about 4 years ago at the last good guys car event I managed to make.

There is a Hilton (more than 100/nite) but it's on 4th I think walking distance to everything down town - all the music joints and good eats, CM Hall of Fame - Arena etc -

If there no special events going on you can get a room at the Maxwell House through kayak or anyone of those travel sites for around $65 + tax. About $85 total. You will have to prepay with no cancelation.

There's a hotel at the White Bridge Rd exit (west nashville) directly across a side street from a Walgreens and across White Bridge from a Waffle House. Maxwell House is always running specials for about $100. As for special events, you'd have to check the Ryman's website, Country Music Hall of Fame, etc...

Personanlly, I'd pay $40 more and try to stay closer to town, just because my old lady and myself would have a drink or three. A lot of hotels closer to town will have a shuttle that will take you somewhere and the closer you are, the cheaper the cab ride back. One side note, most hotels will charge $15 - $20 to park, that's the downside about staying in the downtown vicinity.

Must Do: Prince's Hot Chicken, Country Music Hall of Fame, Robert's Western World.
On your back way out of town, stop at The Loveless Cafe for Breakfast.

fyi, Prince's does not open till noon, but you should get there by 11:30 and wait outside with everyone else. Don't worry about the shooting that happened in the parking lot a couple weeks ago, it was at night. If you don't make it to Prince's, hit up Hattie B's for hot chicken (West End area).

Robert's is great as so it Layla's and the Station Inn.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Loveless, but it's not bad if you want to wait and hour of so. I'd recommend Arnold's on 8th avenue, but it is closed on weekends. So go to loveless and buy some jam and a t-shirt.

LOL!!!! Are you kidding? I'll give you ONE guess what kind of restaurant it is now. Nolensville Rd is now that melting pot libs dream of. I work in that area and there's a Wal Mart where Harding Mall used to be. We call it the UN Giftshop because there's not an American that works in the joint.

Not sure of specific hotels but here's areas I wouldn't stay:

I-24 and Harding Place Area.
Dickerson Rd,
Trinity Lane,
Brick Church Pike,
Murfreesboro Rd and I-24,

Around Opry Mills is safe, Around the airport is above avg safe, Downtown (within a few sq miles of the Capitol) is good.
There are more 'good' areas than bad. But I would NOT stay in the areas I posted above.

Sad thing is, 25 years ago I24/Harding and Trinity Lane were both fairly nice areas to stay. Not any more...

At the same time, 25 years ago, East Nashville was a complete dump with worthless properties and now many of the sub neighborhoods have relatively high property values. Neighborhoods change.

I grew up in the area between Harding and Haywood Lane. You're right, it used to be a good area. My cousin is a detective for metro and he told me that Linbar Dr area gives the projects a run for their money.

Stayed at the Hilton Garden for a bachelor party. It's about a mile from lower broad/County Music hof. They have a shuttle. You can usually get a room for $139 before taxes. That's about the cheapest you'll find and closest.

Another suggestion is the Holiday Inn Vanderbilt. They have a shuttle to Legends Corner. The shuttle shuts down early so count on cab fare if you stay out past 8:00 pm.
The real plus for staying there is the parking. It is free. No valet to tip.

Did I say Loveless? I meant Arnold's Country Kitchen. -probably the only restaurant with "country kitchen" in the name that has won a James Beard award. BTW, Prince's Hot Chicken just won a JB award as well. -right up there with a bunch of high end restaurants serving haute cuisine.

I don't get to go to a lot of the good restaurants when the ol lady comes with me. Her family health history and her high cholesterol pretty much keeps us from a lot. If I'm by myself I can or if a restaurant has healthy stuff we go, but you get tired of the small list of options. Anyways thanks for the help fellas.

So I'm looking at the Nashville Airport Marriot. Seems to be close to a lot of things downtown. What do you guys in Nashville think about the location?

The list of where to *Not* stay is right on target. I'm also not a big fan of the White Bridge Rd. area, though I think it's been cleaned up quite a bit.

A lot depends on what you want to do. As far as eating, I'd suggest checking this site first:

That right off I-40 and Briley Pkwy. It is accessible to much of Nashville, though do not expect much in the way of character as far as the immediate location of your hotel: That area is all strip malls. If you just want a place to sleep that's within 15-20 minutes of downtown, that should be completely fine and reasonably safe/secure.

If you're coming form Memphis, you are going to be on the other side of town. I'd look at some of the Hotels around the Broadway/West End/Elliston Place area. It would save you a little drive time.

There are two or three good motels near the Marriott airport that are cheaper, plus free parking , on Elm Hill pike. And safe , as you can be in Nashtown these days. I spent a lot of my life ther since I was three. lived in most of the good then / bad now areas at one time or another in my life. One of my good friends , hunting and drinking buddies' family owned all the land where I24/Harding is now,, before the interstate was built.. If you don't do anything else, take her to Tootsies on lower Broad. it's a one of a kind and well worth the visit at least one time. I usually take all my visitors there and I' m 80-90 miles away now !
