Anybody had any experience public land hunting on MTNF in southern Missouri? Pros/cons, any advice?

Pros. Ton of land. Plenty of birds. Vocal birds
Cons. You have to stop hunting at midday. If you hunt hunt the first week of season you can only harvest one bird during that opening week. But if you go after opening week you can kill your 2 birds. Crazy rule IMO.
Advice. Get away from others while on mtnf. Plenty of places to get away from the crowd.

It's been years ago that I hunted it, but you'll definitely have room to stretch your legs and wear out some shoe leather. You might take a look at the Missouri Department of Conservation site for detailed harvest summaries by county to narrow your search. There are some huge continuous tracts but if there's good road access can also be lots of pressure, spooky hush-mouthed birds, and bumbling hunters ruining your setups.
I've known lots of folks that floated via canoe to reach places that allowed great hunting of totally unmolested birds. LOTS of floatable rivers through the MTNF: Big Piney, Eleven Point, Black, and Current to name a very few.

Thanks guys. A buddy and I are heading up the 2nd week of their season just in case we get lucky and need that 2nd tag! I'm just kind of excited to go on a little adventure instead of roaming the same ole fields and ridges around home.

Good luck up there. It's some beautiful country. We use to go near hazleton in Texas county. Don't know how it is now but I can't imagine it's changed much. Here is a link to a map is Texas county. Hope it helps.

I've hunted MO two different times. Enjoyed both times, but the 1PM stop time just sux. I went alone, so it would have been better if a buddy had been along.
I'd suggest you check out their state lands as well. They are loaded in that area with state public hunting as well. Good luck!!

Some great public land there
MTNF has alot of birds
I would suggest hunting the first week if you can
With the Season openening on Monday you will have alot less hunting pressure but would be limited to only one bird.

Hunted it for many,many years. Tags have gotten really steep. Missouri has highs and lows. The area we hunt is back on the upswing, with lots of jakes last year. Usually it seems lots of gobblin birds for several years, then the hatchs fall off, tough for several years then it comes back. Lots of birds, find walk in areas. Good luck

never hunted it, but i have run through it- outside Poplar Bluff if me memory serves me. it is big, i do remember that
