Got a place in the garage cleaned out this afternoon and I'm chomping at the bit. I've almost ordered all the parts.

For those interested:

Chevy 350 block bored .030 over
Turned crank
New pistons
Vortex heads (magnafluxed & cleaned up, valve job, new comp 981 springs, & new seals)
Comp's xe256h cam
Edelbrock intake (to match the vortex heads)
Putting this rig back TBI minus the EGR crapola' (take that obummer)
Flowtech 1 5/8" headers

Not sure on mufflers yet. May just drive around with headers for a few years \:D \:D

Make sure that camshaft is compatable with the TBI system, they won't run right with very much cam unless you modify the computer , if you call comp cams, they will help you out , sounds like it'll be a strong motor, good luck

You're gonna cut the deck down a shade to square it up and remove the rust right?

I always have the decks squared and the mains line bored when building a block for the first time. Won't have to worry about it if you ever freshen it up but on the initial build it doesn't hurt.

Yeah I am going to have block work done too.

Also, I decided to go with a carburetor so I don't have all of the computerized stuff making things more complicated.

I have about a 620 roller cam from comp that I might be willing to part with but it's probably too much for a flat top motor. Nice build!

keep us updated. i just had some work done on my hunting rig. New rear brakes and bearings and u joint and front brakes and tune up and tires. That when my wife said it had to stop. I had alomost went through my entire bonus from work. So I had to sneak the shocks in under the radar. Then she helped me put them on.

I can't believe it's been a month since I've started this post.

I've been working a lot and researching a lot also. I just got it back from the machine shop yesterday and it's all cleaned up with new freeze plugs and cam bearings- ready for that paint!





Ready for it?!





I'm excited and look forward to the parts getting in. And thanks for the cam offer Johnny but I've got another in mind. \:\)

You going with a steel crank? I can recomend JE ultralight pistons with H beam rods. Keep that bottom end light and you can make some mean HP.

Thanks for the recommendation there BigB. I'm going to try my best to keep cost down though. I'll check into those when I build again for sure.

I have some more pictures of the progress so far.


My goodies came in a couple of weeks ago.







I still have a ways to go. I just wanted to put the parts together and see what I've got to look forward to.

Ah thanks for the check in fellas. I just started a new job but I'm working on it some when I can find time apart. I really lost steam when I had to replace the crank. For some reason it let some wind out of my sails and I'm taking extra care to put everything in right. Like I said- it's my first time doing this so I'm learning as I go.

Fixing to get the oil pump in and then I'll start on the top end. At this rate it should be done December 2015. \:\/

Progress is a process I suppose. ;\)

I tell y'all what. I lost my patience this evening trying to put the oil pickup into the oil pump. Nearly impossible with that press fit to install the tube without damaging it.
I damaged the tube after I already had redloktite on there to help the seal. Oh we'll. $35 lesson.
Looks like ill have to buy the special tool for $30 and do it the right way.


It's definitely frustrating using my little available free time to figure out new tools to order. \:\/ I suppose it could be much much worse so I'm thankful for that.


Anyhow- prayers would be greatly appreciated as I would really really like to have this together and on the break in cycle before winter.

I still have to put the heads on, set the valves, intake and distributor, and figure out how to feed the pressure regulator and return lines for the carburetor to work with my electric fuel pump.

You don't need a special tool. Depending on the size of your pickup tube a 5/8 of 11/16 open end wrench will slide over the tube. Secure the pump have a friend hold the pickup while you hold and tap the wrench. It works really well with no damage. Been doing it this way for years.

I was surprised at how much larger the intake ports are on these vortex heads. .269 larger!! Vroom

made some progress yesterday. Got the heads on finally.


Set the valves today and got the intake on. Feels good to make some headway!!!

This is the pressure regulator that you need. It has a bypass built in that will divert excess fuel back to the tank. That fuel flow cools your pump. I have used several of them on throttle body to carb conversions. Leave your fuel pump wired stock and also leave the computer connected as it runs the pump for the first 3 seconds after the key is turned on. After that, the oil pressure switch runs it.

Good looking out CR500AFX. I have that very one (ordered it a while ago). I've read to keep the pressure at 5.5 psi so I got a pressure gauge too. Back to work tomorrow so I hope to find time again soon.

My biggest issue now is getting the fuel lines worked out (shouldn't be much trouble).

5.5 is low for that application. I've never started with less than 7 and worked up from there depending on supporting parts. The vortechs flow really well and I think you will find out pretty quick 5 psi won't keep up.

As far as fuel lines follow cr500 advice and by the regulator. Then all you have to do is adapt your existing lines to the regulator and one new short line to run to the carb. Set your pressure and go. This is the way I would recommend also as I have done several this way. There are other ways to do it though, one of the most popular shadetree ways that inexpensive is go to any parts store and ask for a inline 7-9 psi fuel pump. Then all you do is put it inline in your current fuel feed line, disable current pump (pull fuse) and wire the new pump to keyed 12 volts and go. You can do away with the return line. You leave the factory pump in the tank and just pull thru it. Its crude, cheap and effective. Only money your out is what the pump cost and however much fuel line you need to get to the carb. Prob be done under 30 bucks. Its not how I do mine nor do I recommend it but I have seen it done time after time and it works.

I just built an S10 making in the 400HP range with a Quickfuel (holley) 750 Double pumper and it is good thru the 1/8 mile with the regulator set to the factory 5.5 PSI. (the instructions that came with mine said it is preset to 5.5psi)I see you're running an Edelbrock that is 600CFM so you shouldn't have a problem. One key note. You want the regulator as close to the carb as possible. On the S10, the fuel lines exit the frame in front of the driver side motor mount and rubber hoses connect them to more metal lines that run up behind the alternator (serpentine belt setup). I put the regulator right over and to the left of the water neck. Your fuel lines may come up the top side of the tranny to the rear of the engine so you could put the regulator behind the carb if there is room. I used compression fittings and hard piped the one I did. If you use any rubber hose between the pump and the regulator, you will need fuel injection hose that is pressure rated.

Not to rain on your parade but, any time you have two surfaces that need to seal to each other (like the intake to the heads and water pump to block) you want to make sure there's not any paint on the mating surfaces. Not saying it's going to leak but if in a couple months you get a vacuum leak you can't find or water seepage from the water pump (or a little water in the oil) pull the intake and clean the heads up. You used good gaskets which may get you by for a little while but if the paint decides it doesn't want to stick to the head after a few heat cycles you're gonna have troubles...

I appreciate that rubberduck270. I was wondering if anyone would pick up on it. I actually cleaned about 1/2" of the paint from around the ports before I put the gaskets on. I'm pretty sure it'll hold up. Least I hope and pray it does \:\)

Truck is running and I still have a few odds and ends to sure up. Trans lines are leaking from where they connect with transmission- so Ill replace those. Drove it down the road for a bit and it runs well so far.

Praise God it runs. I'm very happy to have it on the road

I've built a lot of stuff myself over the years, and using something you've built yourself is the ultimate satisfaction. I can't imagine the grin on my face if I drove a vehicle with an engine I had built.
