I remember reading that a steel leg hold trap has to be set in the opening to the animals den? I'd like to try and catch a coon before season closes. The area is very dense thicket and the coon trails disappear into briars where no human can go. Is there a legal way to set a leg hold trap in such a place? Also I know I cannot bait the area but can I put a piece of fish right next to the trap? Thanks

The trap cannot be set on top of the ground unless it is a cushion hold trap. A small piece of fish as a lure would be OK.
You have to have written permission of the landowner to trap.

Jonathan, The trapping regulations are covered in TCA 70-4-120 and the Manner and Means Proclamation. Both of those can be accessed off of the main TWRA website in the lower, left hand corner listed as Rules and Regulations. They are also linked at the top of the TWRA section on here (thanks BGG!).
The dogproof coon traps mentioned above likely would be a better option for you. sn

By your original reply, does this mean I can dig a small hole in the middle of a coon trail to set the trap, and cover it with grass, or does it have to be inside a den?

Steel traps that are not cushioned can only be set in water or at least 12" back in a den/hole . They are not legal sitting in a 12" deep open hole. That is considered on top of the ground because any animal can step in/on it. The only traps that can be set on top of the ground like that are the cushion-hold traps and the dogproof that pass-thru mentioned.

Back to cat's origional question, the only steel traps legal for a dirthole set are the cushion jawed traps.
