What causes this in big fat cartridges with steep necks? Happened 3 times to me today on my 300 Wsm

Were you seating the bullet when it happened? I have had it happen to a few of mine on my 300 and 325 and believe it is due to the case being stretched a little more than others. I backed the die out about 1/8 turn and then set my plunger a little deeper so that OAL is still correct. I was also able to resize the same casings and fix the shoulder and still reload them.

I would say that is your problem. I am no expert and someone may say that I am wrong but that is how I corrected my problem. My 7mm-08 was the worst but I blame that on the Hornady dies. You can try it and see if it works. If you are using a roll crimp it will effect the crimp but I soley use neck tension through sizing instead of a crimp on my rifles. Hope it helps man.

Did you chamfer the case after trimming? Any time I trim or use brass for the first time from factory loads I chamfer it.

I am thinking you have your die sat to low in the press. reread the instructions. I may be wrong but that will do it.

Yep, die is set wrong. If you didn't chamfer, you would see the case neck deformed first, particulary if using flat base bullets. Back the die completely out and re-read instructions and be sure to follow them exactly.
I still read my RCBS instructions every time. I wiped out about 50 300 Winmag cases by not setting the FL die correctly.
