small plot question

what would be best to plant in a old log landing that has a pretty good opening in the conopy and gets decent sunlight? also when to plant? thanks.

One thing to remember about a landing is how compacted the soil is from the trucks, skidders, trees, etc.
If you have the means, equipment to break up the soil and get it loosed up, you probably grow lots of stuff.
I would start by sowing some buckwheat this spring after last frost. Let it grow through the summer then work it again this fall AMD do a clover, wheat mix.

If your log landing is on a ridge top like most, try September planted winter wheat/oats/rye, crimson/arrowleaf clover or rape/turnip. Try just wheat, oats or grain rye this year because it is the easiest, least expensive, and most forgiving. Consider a soil test unless it is a small landing in which case just spread a few bags of pelletized lime.

Buckwheat is a good soil builder just go back in and cut it down and till it in before seedheads form.Going to try sunnhemp and wheat withDakota radishes
after I till my buckwheat in the ground.

I have a landing also. I know it is really compacted, but good light. I was going to do the buckwheat, turn it under, then try tall tine tubers after lime/ fert to see if I can get the tubers to help be break up the subsoil...
