Hey guys.

We are looking at putting in another bedroom in the family home. The room in question figures to measure around 16x30 with a 3' closet running the width on one end.

Between my father-in-law and I we can do quite a bit of the work. We can frame it and run electrical and do the drywall. However, we do have some questions regarding tying it into the existing roof and foundation work.

I'd kindly ask any member with home building knowledge who doesn't mind sharing a little information with us to please do.

Obviously we are trying to do most of the work ourselves so that we can cut down on the costs. I'm pretty confident that what I don't know I can figure out but it wouldn't hurt to get some help along the way and especially before starting. If you can help me out maybe we can help you out and give you a place to deer hunt this fall.

PMs are welcomed.

Thanks

You will have to pour your footing first, and tying on to the roof is no big deal. Is the existing roof on the side you are wanting to add a gable or a hip roof?

It is a gable roof to which we would be tying into

From what I've figured out today the room with the roof that we would be tying into has a 12' ceiling. Maybe a little higher. So if the new room had 8' ceilings as planned and if we used a 4/12 pitch roof we may have enough room to not actually have to tie it into that roof at all. I think we'd only have to cut into the wall as the new roof would actually step down from the existing. It may mean that we'd have to sit the foundation pad a little lower but that's easier than having to actually cut into an existing roof, I think.

To me the biggest trick in remodeling or an addition is to make it look like it was built that way originally . So many times you see people create an eye sore that takes away from the value of your home . A step down in the roof like you are saying may look pretty good . A pic of the front and that end would be most helpfull for ideas to make it look good .

Appreciate the help so far. It's nice to have others to fall back on when you're knowledge gets depleted.
