As our day was winding down, we had all become good friends, having experienced a rollicking day in the woods together, drawing blood, and dadgone if I hadn't gotten those Brooklyn boys to clean the squirrel and help with the cooking! We were taking it easy in lawn chairs gathered around a fire pit, finishing off the last of a good meal. During one of those post-feast lulls where everyone is just kind of staring into the flames, tired and full, says I, you know, when the chance to take you boys squirrel hunting first came up, I almost passed on it.

"We're sure glad you didn't," one of the boys says laughingly.

I let it drop and just stared into the fire, then looked up into his eyes and says, it was on a squirrel hunt years ago that I lost my daughter. Brooklyn #1 goes pale, a significant achievement for a Jewish guy from New York. Time stops. I wait a beat, and look into the eyes of the Brooklyn #2.

Says I, she eventually found her way to the truck, but for about 5 minutes there, it was touch and go. I dab my eye with a napkin.

There is a sudden explosion of laughter and released tension and relief. "Oh man!" exclaims B#1, just a little bit of color coming back into his face.

You know, I might have liked to take them guys fishing, but I'm afraid they'd swallow all the bait. \:D

That one was funny too. You could hear their relief when they started laughing. \:D
