I don't know about the internet, but you may want to check out the archives in your local library. I have found some good Civil War sites that way.

When I lived in Nashville I would spend hours on end exploring the state archives looking at old maps for metal detecting sites. Just like deer hunting finding spots is much easier than getting permission. Good metal detecting spots have had many problems with trespassers digging holes and not filling them in. People going out in the middle of the night ect. Good Luck to you.Remenber if you dig a hole fill it back in. The best way is to cut a piece of sod out then dig. After you're done the sod can be replanted with no damage done.

When researching the archives you are more likely to find some spots from reading diaries and manuscripts. You might find a reference to the name of a creek or hill that you can locate on modern topo maps.

When searching for camp sites or dumps along creeks .Keep in mind that floods often have changed the course of a creek or river bed. Look around and think about where the bed might have been way back when. A horseshoe bend then could be straight across now . A island in a river could very well have been the bank of the river during war time.

Thanks so much for the help. Ive only been doing this for about 6 months or so. I always treat the land like it was my front yard.I have also found it is hard to gain permission.
