I throw Bandits and Strike King 5xd and 6xd. The right rod and reel makes all the difference for deep cranking. I use a 7'8" glass rod with a revo winch 5.4-1 with 10-12lb fluorocarbon. You can sling them a mile and you don't get tired after cranking for awhile.

Spro makes a very good deep diving crankbait as well.

Bandits are my favorites; mostly size 200.

You can rig a carolina rig with a shallow-running crankbait on 18 to 24 inch leader and slowly retrieve it.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of a crankbait? Where do you use this technique?

Hey Ruger. I know its not a crank bait, but if you haven't tried the Tennessee rig, you need to give it a try. Lots of big fish being caught on it right now.

I generally like crankbaits, and they work best (for me) when bumping bottom. But sometimes the bottom is covered with weeds or dead leaves which foul up the hooks and diving bill, ruining the action. Also, sometimes the fish want a slow, tight wobble but the shallow divers can't get down to where the fish are holding. So, use a sliding weight above a swivel, and use a leader long enough that the crankbait hovers just above the bottom. Cast it out, let the sinker drag it back to the bottom, and then retreive it in short spurts. It will dive down on the retriee, then slowly rise on slack line like a wounded minnow. If nothing grabs it, retrieve it again for a yard or two and pause.
