No bread, no potatoes, no rice, no pasta,no sweets, limit beer. In other words, eat nothing that you really like except meat, and get some exercise. You should be alright.

Deal with it everyday. I take insulin and metformin daily. I am supposed to limit my carb intake to 70 carbs a meal. Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. Weight loss and exercise are big. No sweet tea, sugar free syrup, etc. If the food is white its not good for a diabetic to eat.

And watching your weight makes a big difference. I always struggled to keep my diabetes under control. I have now lost 62 pounds and since then, I am off my meds. My fasting glucose has been around 70-90 the last few weeks.

Find a good endocrinologist and have them set you up with a nutritionist. My Uncle is off shots now that he is doing what they recommend.

I am a care giver for my 83 year old mother in law. She is diabetic. With meal planning and exercise she very rarely needs shots. Twice a day 30 to 45 minutes burns enough sugar that she can eat some starchy foods without it jacking up her sugar. She burns most of it off with a little bicycle that she pedals while sitting in her recliner.

Whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta are good substitutes for white bread and regular pasta.
Multigrain Cheerio's and Oatmeal for breakfast.

Type 2 here, take Metformin twice daily, fingersticks about 4x/day.

Lose weight, eat right, and for heaven's sake, see an honest to gosh Endocrinologist, preferably one that subscribes to the AACE (American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists) guidelines over the ADA (American Diabetes Association).
Big difference.

Type II for 14 years. Have had some ups and downs , but mostly did ok with the meds. Decided I was tired of meds and began something new on Jan.10. In 39 days my diabetes meds are cut in half and should be off them by summer.

I am doing this without starving or counting carbs or watching every bite that enters my mouth.

Nutrition + true healthy foods + exercise + weight loss = success.

As for as the Diabetes Endocrinologist, we go to AM Diabetes in Bartlett and see Belinda Hilliard. They desire (Dr. Latif) that your A1c remains at 6.0 or below.

My sugar was 444 the day I decided to get checked out. Had dropped 40 lbs and coukdn't figure out why. Platued at 55 with 25 more to go. 1000mg Metformin 2x a day and I'm usually ok. My bad days I can hit 160, average between 70 and 90. Potatoes lay me out like a light. We won't talk about Christmas...

Great post and I'm glad you're seeing progress. Diet and exercise are the key factors to managing and potentially reversing diabetes.

Keep fighting and it'll be much easier on you from this end before you get to a point where you're having to fight to maintain your limbs. Sorry to be so blunt.

Type 2 here. Normal daily checks run in the 110-120 range. But I am on 1000mg metformin 2x a day, 5 mg glyburide 2x/day, and 5 mg januvia 1x/day to keep it there. Guess I outta tell my wife about the avoiding white foods.

You guys with smartphones can download a free app called LOSE IT that will help you stay on your diet if you record what you eat it will keep track of your carbs/protein/ etc.

Good luck. Strong advise by Rutman and kudos to him.

I have an 11 yr old son who is Type 1. He was diagnosed when he was 9. He wears an insulin pump and checks his blood sugar every 2 hrs or so when he is awake. He has to calculate the carbs in everything he eats and give insulin for it. It has been a learning experience but he has not let it slow him down. He has always been a picture of perfect health and is a great athlete. He has never once complained about it or used it as an excuse. To say I was devastated when he was diagnosed would be an understatement. To say he is an exceptional child would be an even bigger one.

Yep, that's about right - walking is good - limit carb intake - I need to get back on my 'pre' diet -

ferg....

good luck with it, but it can be done -
