I have my Dad's 1991 Chevy Cheyenne 2500 that he drove a lot. I'm looking to replace or rebuild the 305.

I'm thinking about buying a crate GM engine but I also have the option to rebuild the engine. I broker it down and put a rebuild kit in it and time got away from me... Two summers later and rust build on the cylinder walls really buggered up the rings.

I believe this truck was originally equipped with TBI but has a junk carb on it now that absolutely will not be in consideration to use again.

Dad taught me a lot about engines and I could look up the odds and ends that I don't know.

You that are familiar with this type of stuff.. Should I buy or rebuild? Cost will add up quick if I get the motor dipped, valve job done... new carburetor (or TB kit).. whatever else I've missed and the rebuild kit. I'll be doing either out in the yard anyway but I would like to buy a 350 GM motor. The truck has the 4L60E transmission for what it's worth.

Thanks for any advice fellas. I want to do this thing right and give it to my kids one day.

Cheaper to do it ur self will cost ya more to buy a engine but then you will at least have a warranty with it, 15 years ago when I was younger I would have just done it my self but now I think I would buy one and set it in and be done with it. The good thing about doing it your self you can put what ever you want in the motor though

Have not bought one in a while but few years back you could buy a new basic 350 with a warranty for way cheaper than you could a complete rebuild with machine work done. It was a no brainer unless you were doing a restoration and needed the original numbers matching block and heads for authenticity. Also look at Jasper rebuilds. They have a lot of good options with a warranty as well.

I have gone through the steps to build a nice engine.... for what it cost me, I could have bought a built crate engine and put a fuel injection setup on top... and the headers.

350 crate engines can be had from mild to wild.... your budget... But I would just save the time and running around and buy a crate engine.... the time, gas, and little odds & ends add up.

Crate, but I would stay away from the 305s.

Just bought a 350 crate motor for our 99 yukon, 2200 for the motor. 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. I THINK IT IS A NO BRAINER.

Not my truck or my engine so by all means buy the crate engine if that's the way you want to go but......I have heard of and seen my fare share of bad deals on crate engines. Stories like welded up cranks that had been broken in a previous life, improper bearing clearances, improper rod, main, and head bolt torques. From places like Advance, AutoZone, and Jasper. I know they have a warranty with them for just these cases but if you are installing yourself they won't pay for the multiple times you have to R & I.

Chevy engine parts are not that expensive , especially 350 parts. I would even look at buying a running 350 and doing a basic rebuild on it.

Put a newer 5.3 liter in it and never look back. You can pick one up ready to drop in for less than the cost of a 350 and have alot more power and fuel injection. 230 hp crate 350 or a 310 hp LS based 5.3 liter seems like a no brainer to me
Example 5.3 liter

I bought mine for $550 complete, $340 to have the harness and ECM worked, $50 for mounting adapters and $100 for a new fuel pump
