the 350 "crate" engines from GM are new engines, the ones from a-z, advance etc or rebuilt units - friend made that mistake years ago bought one from advance it wanted to run hot it was bored 80 over! also had bolts threaded into & welded into the heads to repair cracks. DONT BUILD BUY A GM CRATE ENGINE
Not my truck or my engine so by all means buy the crate engine if that's the way you want to go but......I have heard of and seen my fare share of bad deals on crate engines. Stories like welded up cranks that had been broken in a previous life, improper bearing clearances, improper rod, main, and head bolt torques. From places like Advance, AutoZone, and Jasper. I know they have a warranty with them for just these cases but if you are installing yourself they won't pay for the multiple times you have to R & I.
Chevy engine parts are not that expensive , especially 350 parts. I would even look at buying a running 350 and doing a basic rebuild on it.

Thanks y'all. I'll dig deep and start looking for a good deal on one of those GM motors.
Any advice? I'm not wanting a hot rod but do want some pulling power if needed. I was thinking the 290hp/350ci?

Get a lil more than you think you want.... otherwise you won't be happy until you pony up for more....
