Found this ol' feller today while rabbit hunting. His entire skeleton was on a tiny island in a slough, less than 100 yards from a parking area. Must have been recent as he had flesh still on him. The flesh at the base of the antlers, where the coyotes couldn't get to, is sun dried like jerky. I bet you could eat it.

That skull is in mint condition, good find. You gonna do a euro? I'd do it for you if we were closer. Might smell a bit at first, but that thing needs to be on the wall!

Yeah, probably cook it off tomorrow or Monday. It doesn't really stink at all. Most if what is left is dried out. Really just needs to be steamed and it should all come off.

Really nice find!!!!! But did you miss the rabbits before or after you found the skull, cause if I found a skull like that, I would be too excited to hunt and miss everything too haha

dang... bet it was buried under leaves somewhere. or dragged off a short ways by a yote. Let me go get my skull which is 4.5 and look at the top teeth and compare, I think yours have more wear.

Yours looks like it must be 5.5+

this one is 4.5

I just realized it now, but his 3rd teeth grew in sideways!

This one is 8.5+ and is a bit sun bleached

Comparatively speaking, I think you are correct, Catman. It does look 5.5

I hunted this particular area frustratingly hard 2 years ago. While post season scouting last year, I found buck sign that suggested a big racked buck. In impenetrable thickets around the edge of a huge field, we found bedding spots where every small tree was extensively rubbed. To the front is a large field, to the rear is a maze-like slough. Much of the field edge is chest high briars. In the narrow buffer zone between the field and the slough are plenty of mature oaks and dozens of persimmon trees. Infinite Cover, food and water all within mere feet of the bedding areas. The deer could easily watch hunters park and see which direction they would walk. The briars are so dense that you could walk within 3 feet of a bedded deer and never see it. Or, the deer could disappear into the slough with 3 leaps. Out in the slough, where I found this buck, the deer seem to like to bed on little "islands" i.e. mounds of dirt, surrounded by water. Cattails and reeds grow 10-12 feet high. In the off season, I have found numerous of these little island with deer hair on them or imprints of a bedded deer in the dirt. You bump one of them, they jump in the water, making a ruckus, causing all the other deer to likewise spook. If you bump any ducks out, deer will often spook as well. The entire area is wired up tight with a natural "alarm system."

After hunting there for two years, I had only laid eyes on a single 3.5 year old buck. I've pretty much thrown in the towel on trying to hunt individual bucks in this particular area, because, after analyzing the way that they are bedding, I'm not sure if there is a legal/ethical tactic that could lead to success unless it was pure, dumb luck. Its nice to have at least confirmed my suspicions that there are some big boys (or, at least 1 big boy) using the area.

Very interesting poser, thanks for sharing. I am used to such briars, even ones 10 ft tall, I don't like going through them, but I will for deer hunting and scouting and have the torn up clothes and hands to prove it... anyway it sounds like the perfect sanctuary for the older deer on public land. Dont forget the pics when you get the euro done! I would like to see it finished. About to finish mine as well, got a nice piece of barn wood today.

For a second I thought we were hunting the same spot, but I think not based on your description of the layout \:\)

He's a beast! Those swamp deer are tough to hunt, but I love that the thick habitat keeps them there and seems to allow the spots to be a bit more tolerant of hunting pressure (a good asset for public land).
