So, I just came back home a few mins ago with my first every muzzleloader. Wally world special..couldnt pass it up. Found a CVA wolf for what seemed like a good price compared to what all I see online for the same gun. Only thing is, they left the dang trigger lock on it. \:\( The ram rod seems a little short, but i just read something online about it twisting to extend...I will check that out shortly. Any other tips I need to know for a first time muzzleloader owner??

Yes, Blackhorn 209 powder and either CCI 209M or Federal 209A shotshell primers. If it were me I would avoid pellets like the plague. Been there, done that. Never going back. Use Blackhorn 209 unless you want to clean your rifle early and often. Have fun!

It will probably be a little while before I ever shoot it, but now I dont have to haul the bow during muzzle season.

Just be sure you clean it thoroughly as you already know. I swear by Bore Butter, used it my 3 muzzleloaders, following the directions and it's the best for preserving the finish/barrel. A lot of guys on here don't like it but trust me- it works awesome when used properly. I also would recommend the pre-measured powder pellets. Mz is by far my favorite season!?

I have the CVA Wolf Magnum...cheap Simmons scope...gun shoots great once you figure out the right combination of ammo and powder pellets. The scope, however, will go out of whack with just a minor whack...btw my ramrod is a little short to but it works. And what CV said, you gotta clean it...alot. The whole setup is worth the money...except for the scope that I have. I'm going to upgrade this fall

yeah, i am thinking about using the premeasured pellets...but saw someone here recommend doing the blackhorn powder which i say isnt that bad either as long as you just use tubes that you have already premeasured in.

I haven't been able to shoot the 209 yet, but I hate the pellets. Leave a crud ring, and the 777 to me is messy.

Bingo! Buy tubes, pre-measure loads at your house, go to the range, pour it in and keep shooting while your pellet-using friends are swabbing between shots. Also, with Blackhorn 209 you clean the rifle using regular oil based gun cleaners that you would use with a centerfire rifle. You don't have to buy separate water based black powder cleaners and barrel lubricants.

Blackhorn 209 vs other propellants
